ARRIVAL

Graduands MUST be present in the Robing Room, Llewellyn Hall wearing their academic dress, 1 hour before the start of their conferring ceremony to collect their seating allocation and to hear instructions from the Assistant Marshall about what they will need to do during the ceremony.

Late arrivals may be excluded from the Conferring Ceremony.

Guests should be seated 15 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. Lift access to the hall is available to those graduands and guests who require special assistance.   If you have guests with special seating arrangements (example wheelchair) and require further assistance, please make yourself known to an usher who will take you to the hall and assist you to your seat.

DURING THE CEREMONY

How to wear your Academic Dress
  1. Put your gown on and pull it as far forward as you can on your shoulders (the back of the neck should be even with your collar if you’re wearing a shirt or jacket) Masters students should put their arms through the slit in the sleeve, Bachelors should wear the entire length of the sleeve.
  2. Open the hood so it is all black on the outside with the colour insider and at the top. Put it over your head so that there is a V shape across your chest pointing toward your toes.
  3. Turn out the coloured silk just at the sides of your neck. It should still be completely black down the V in front.  You can secure your hood to your gown with safety pins (underneath so they don’t show)
  4. The smaller point of the mortarboard goes on your forehead. If you have not graduated before, the tassel goes to the left.
  5. PhDs will be hooded on stage, you should wear only your gown and bonnet until this time.

ANU Staff will be available on the day of your ceremony to help you gown correctly, please do not hesitate to ask for help.

Please allow 2 hours for the ceremony.

You will be directed by a marshall as to when you need to leave your seat and move towards the left hand side of the stage. Pause until your name is announced by the Dean. After you have received the Testamur from the Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor and shaken their hand, you continue across the stage, around the back of the hall and return to your seat.

NOTE: When Graduands are seated in the audience it is customary for men to remove their caps; women Graduands should feel free to remove their caps if they wish; all Graduands should be capped when proceeding out of the hall.
