Australian citizens, permanent humanitarian visa holders

Australian citizens and holders of permanent humanitarian visas are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place at the ANU in which the Commonwealth Government will partially subsidise the cost of your tuition. You are required to pay a contribution towards your fees, which you can do in one of three ways:

  1. pay your entire student contribution up-front and receive a 20% discount.
  2. pay part of your student contribution up-front (minimum payment of $500.00) and receive a 20% discount on the amount paid, and receive a government loan (called HECS-HELP) for the remainder of the contribution, which you defer paying back through the tax system until you start to earn a salary above the repayment threshold.
  3. receive a government loan (called HECS-HELP) for your entire student contribution, which you defer paying back through the tax system once you start to earn a salary above the repayment threshold.

Read the fact sheet for more information.

Fact Sheet 2010

When enrolling through ISIS, all Commonwealth Supported Students will need to complete an electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form ('e-CAF') in order to to defer payment of all or part of your student contribution, you will also need to supply your Tax File Number (TFN).Please note if you do not supply your TFN, or a Certificate of application for a TFN you will not be eligible to be Commonwealth Supported.

Invoices will be available to view or download from ISIS each semester/session. If you have chosen to defer part or all of your liability, and you have provided your TFN, your liability will be deferred automatically after the course census date.

Students who wish to pay their contribution up front or partially upfront must do so by the due date. Partial payments will not be accepted after the due date. This is different to the census date.

Students who wish to defer their debt will have their student debt notified to the Australian Taxation Office. Within 28 days of the census date, a Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) will be made available in ISIS to download. The CAN is under the menu and is called an eCAN. The CAN shows how much your HECS-HELP loan is for. You should keep a copy of your CAN for taxation purposes.

Students commencing a new program in 2010

Eligible students that commence a new program of study at ANU in 2010 will be charged at the scheduled 2010 rate.  In 2011 and beyond, the rate will be indexed.  You will be informed of the 2011 rate when it is published in October 2010.

Remember that a new program = a new rate.  For students transferring to a new program (including changes from a combined to single degree program) in 2010, you will be charged at the applicable 2010 rate.

Changes for 2010

Students commencing a program in 2010 will be required to pay up to the maximum of the Band 1 rate ($5,310 indexed for later years) for any education courses that they undertake.

Student Learning Entitlement (SLE)

All Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a Permanent visa are allocated a Student Learning Entitlement.  This is measured in equivalent fulltime student load (EFTSL).  To be Commonwealth Supported for a course, you must have enough SLE to cover the EFTSL value of the course you intend to undertake.

It is your responsibility to monitor your SLE and ensure you have sufficient SLE to cover your course/s.

Your SLE is made up of ordinary, any additional, and lifelong SLE.  Your SLE will be used to undertake study as a Commonwealth Supported Student.  You may be entitled to further SLE.  It is your responsibility to investigate this.  Please refer to sections 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 in the Information for Commonwealth Supported Students booklet 2010.  This can be found at the DEEWR website www.goingtouni.gov.au.

Once the university is alerted that a student no longer has any SLE they are required cancel your enrolment as a Commonwealth Supported Student.

Students who are cancelled from their Commonwealth Supported place will be enrolled in a Domestic Fee paying place.  Eligible students may apply for FEE HELP. Please be aware that there is a 20% loading on top of the tuition fees for undergraduate students.

You can expect that the domestic tuition fees will be greater than the Commonwealth Supported contribution amount
