Commonwealth Assistance Notices (e-CANs)

Your e-CAN's Explained

  • Commonwealth Assistance Notices (e-CANs) are located on ISIS under the Account Details menu.  We DO NOT email or mail e-CANs to students.
  • All students enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (HECS) will have an e-CAN generated for each census date that they have an enrolment.  The e-CAN includes important information about your enrolment such as the amount you have been charged for each course, any discount you have received, any payments you have made, any deferred payments and how much Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) you have used.
  • Graduate students that have elected to use Fee-Help will also receive a CAN each census date that they are enrolled.  The e-CAN provides a record of the course that you were enrolled in, cost of the course and the amount of the debt that has been deferred.
  • An e-Can will be posted on your ISIS account no later than 28 days after the census date of each of your courses.  If you believe that the information on your e-CAN is incorrect you have 14 days from the date the e-CAN was generated to make a written request to the ANU Enrolments Office to correct the error.
  • You should check the details on your e-CAN carefully to ensure:
  • The amount you have been charged is correct
  • That any units from which you have been withdrawn on or before the census date have not been included
  • Your Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).  It is your responsibility to monitor your SLE and ensure you have enough to complete your courses.
  • Graduating students should save or print all your e-CANs so you have them available after you lose access to the student system.

Here is what your Commonwealth Assistance Notice will generally look like.

A Breakdown of your Commonwealth Assistance Notice

ANU Enrolments Office Contact Details – The ANU Student Fees office is responsible for generating your e-CAN however if you feel there is an error with your CAN it is more than likely an enrolment issue.  You should contact the ANU Enrolments Office on these contact details immediately and no longer than 14 days from the date your CAN was generated to have your e-CAN amended.

Your Name & Mailing Address – This is the name and mailing address we have recorded for you on our system. If you notice that the details are incorrect or no longer current you can update these details in ISIS.  It is in your best interest to keep your details up to date so that you are easy to contact if there is an issue.

Date of Issue – This is the date that your e-CAN was generated and posted on ISIS.  Errors must be reported no later than 14 days from the date of issue.

Term – This will reflect the term that the enrolment and CAN relates to.

Census Date – e-CAN’s are generated based on a census date.  As Semester 1 (31st March) & Semester 2 (31st August) courses have common census dates, students enrolled in these sessions will only receive 1 CAN per session.  Summer, Autumn, Winter & Spring sessions have a census date every Friday so students enrolled in these sessions may receive more than one e-CAN depending upon the census date of the courses.

CHESSN – As part of the Admission process you are allocated a Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number.  Your CHESSN is unique and is the number you will require when seeking information from the Government regarding your SLE, HELP debt or other forms of Commonwealth Assistance.

Award(s) – This should reflect the primary program that you are enrolled in.

Course – This column will list the courses that you have been enrolled in that relate to a particular census date and for which you have received Commonwealth Assistance.

Census Date – The census date that your CAN relates to.  e-CAN’s are generated based on census date.

EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load)– 1 EFTSL is the equivalent of 8 (6 unit) courses, or 48 units.  Therefore 1 six unit course = 0.125 EFTSL.   The total EFTSL shown is just what you have used for those courses shown on your CAN.  This is not an accumulated balance.

SLE (Student Learning Entitlement) Used – Eligible students are entitled to 7 years of Commonwealth Support.  SLE is measured in EFTSL.
The total SLE shown is just what you have used for those courses shown on your CAN.  This is not an accumulated balance.  For an accumulated balance you would need to check your previous CAN’s and/or the myUniAssist on the DEEWR going to uni website

Course Charges – This column shows the amount you have been charged for each course that you have been enrolled in, prior to any discounts being applied.

Loan Fees – A Loan Fee of 25% applies to FEE-HELP loans for undergraduate courses of study. It is quite rare that a loan fee would be shown on your account.

Payments – Commonwealth Supported (HECS) students and Fee-Help students who make partial payments will have these reflected on their CAN.

Discounts – Eligible students who are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place are eligible for a 10% discount if fees are paid up-front.  If an up-front payment is made, the discount received will be reflected on your CAN.

HELP Debt – Shows any amount that has been deferred for each course in that session.  If you have paid your fees up-front, there should be not amounts shown in this column (as in the example above).

Total FEE-HELP/HECS-HELP Debt - The total FEE-HELP/HECS-HELP Debt recorded on your CAN shown is not an accumulated balance.  This balance only reflects those courses shown on your CAN for this census date.
