Guidelines for Publishing

Authors
In order to ensure that research can be counted in the DEST collection, authors should target the following:

Books and Book Chapters

  • ensure that the publisher qualifies under the DEST criteria as a 'commercial publisher whose core business is publishing' (note that many societies, associations, government departments, international organisations etc. are not accepted by DEST as commercial publishers. Many which are approved are listed in the DEST Register of Acceptable Commercial Publishers, others are listed in the Research Office Approved Publishers List)
  • ensure that the book is packaged and sold and has an ISBN.

Journal articles

  • ensure that the article being published has been peer reviewed, and that there is evidence to indicate this
  • ensure that the journal has an ISSN or an ISBN, if it is published as a book on a regular basis.

Conference papers

  • present the paper at a conference of national or international significance
  • ensure that the full paper has been peer reviewed, and that there is evidence to indicate this
  • ensure that the full paper is published in paper or electronic format, and is widely available, not limited to attendees at the conference.

Conference Organisers
If you are organising a conference or symposium at the ANU, or co-organising a conference or symposium with another institution, and wish the papers presented at the conference to meet the DEST specifications, it would be helpful to do the following:

  • ensure that the conference is of national or international significance and that there is proof of this e.g. the origin of guests/participants
  • arrange a peer review process for the papers, and ensure that full papers are reviewed (not just abstracts)
  • publish the proceedings in paper or electronic format, and ensure that the proceedings indicate that all papers were peer reviewed
  • ensure that the date of publication is listed on the conference proceedings.

If you wish to obtain any further information about how publications can more easily qualify for the DEST collection, please contact Margaret Richardson in the Research Office on (02) 6125 7947 or email Margaret Richardson.
