Welcome to this fortnight's
Research Office Newsletter. The development of the ANU's
research management system, ARIES, began back in 2003. Since then the Grants
and Contracts, Animal Ethics, Publications, Human Ethics and ERA (RQF)
modules have been moved into production.
In about three months time, the last of the 'original' modules,
Recombinant DNA Ethics, will be rolled out.
At that time the 'original' ARIES development project will come to an
end. That will not mean, however, that
development of ARIES will cease. Work
has already begun on the construction of a Commercialisation
module for the Office of Commercialisation and work
will soon commence on the specification of upgrades to the Grants &
Contracts and the Animal Ethics modules. In addition changes have begun to
enable the University to meet the requirements of ERA and these will continue
once the ARC releases its final specifications. You will shortly be asked to
participate in a Forum to assist in the specification of the upgrade to the
Grants and Contracts module and I urge all users of the module and those
actively involved in research management to consider participating. We can only hope to develop a module that
meets your needs and those of the University if you actively participate in
the upgrade process. Those of you with extensive knowledge of the module and
of grant processes should also consider volunteering to be a member of the
Project Team for the upgrade. Once the original project
development of ARIES concludes, the ARIES Project Management and Steering
Committees will be replaced by an ARIES OMG which will include representatives
of the major users of each of the ARIES modules. |

Responsible Practice of Research The ANU policy, Responsible
Practice of Research has been revised and is effective from August1
2008. It can be found at: http://info.anu.edu.au/Policies/_DRO/Policies/Responsible_Research_Practice.asp?tab=1 The 2008 policy contains elements
from the 2003 ANU policy and the 2007 Australian Code for the Responsible
Conduct of Research and has also taken into account comment following
circulation of the draft policy. The policy consists of two parts. Part A outlines principles and
practices to encourage responsible research conduct:
Part B is concerned with breaches
of the Code, research misconduct, and the framework for resolving
allegations. Currently this section
principally retains the wording of the 2003 policy. The Go8 confidential
draft working paper, Implementing Part B of the Australian Code for the Responsible
Conduct of Research, has been released to G08 DVCs
and NH&MRC, and will ultimately result in changes to Part B of this
policy. Its final wording will also be influenced by the EA process. |
