Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA)

A new set of documents for the ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia) initiative have now been released by the Australian Research Council. There is one set of final documents and one set of draft documents.

The finalised documents outline the ways in which indicators and metrics will be used to evaluate research and the draft documents are guidelines for the first set of submissions. The drafts include details of what will need to be submitted for Cluster 1 (Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences) and Cluster 2 (Humanities ad Creative Arts). They include detailed technical specifications as well as the descriptive One of the documents contains the technical specifications for the electronic data submission.

These documents are currently available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/era/submission.htm. We will be putting copies on the ANU website as soon as we can, together with any additional material developed or discovered.

Over the next few weeks the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Lawrence Cram, and the Pro-Vice Chancellor Mandy Thomas together with the ERA Project Leader Beverley Payne will be consulting with areas which conduct research which falls under the first two clusters.

As with the RQF, the ANU is dealing with an evolving process on a tight timetable so we will inevitably be asking areas to do some things in very short timeframes. The Project Team will be doing everything they can to minimise the administrative burden on the Colleges so that they are able to concentrate on the academic and strategic aspects of the process.

ARIES  updates

Milestones and Contracts tabs for DP09 - The Milestones tab has been populated with Financial and Research Reporting requirements for successful DP09s. For those who already entered milestone requirements for these grants you will need to DELETE them as they will now be listed twice. The Contract tab has also been populated with contract clause information; however, the contract document itself has NOT been uploaded into the Documents tab.

General Milestone Processes - CLARIFICATION: Milestone requirements should be entered as follows; Initially just the Milestone Name, Milestone due date, and Milestones type are required (with Format.. and Milestone Comments optional). DO NOT enter a future milestone completion date. Once the Milestone has been completed THEN enter the Milestone completion date AND set Milestone completed option to Yes. Also upload the completed report into the Documents tab.

Progress Steps - Please note that the way Progress Steps are completed has changed since the last upgrade. Now you will need to activate a Progress Step by clicking the edit button, set Is step active to Yes, entering a start date and due date, and the name of the owner. Once the progress step has been activated the colour of the Progress Step will change to Blue. Only then are you able to mark the step as completed, once you have clicked the tick button to complete the progress step it will change to Green. The ability to add comments (or add history) remains the same with and without activation of the Progress Step.

Report Writer Training (Grants Module) - the next session will be held on Wednesday 18th February, 9.30am-12.30pm in the Chancelry 10A F&BS Training Lab. Registrations can be made through the HORUS Training Catalogue (training code RO002).
