Welcome to the first Research Office Newsletter for May.

Many of you will know that the ANU is a corporate member of the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS).  ARMS is a professional association for research managers and administrators designed to enhance and build the networks of research professionals across the research enterprise spectrum, as well as to exchange knowledge and expertise on issues to do with the management of research. Corporate membership entitles all ANU staff who are interested in research administration and management to be members of ARMS. It also enables members attending the ARMS national conference to register at the member’s rate. If you are interested in being covered by the ANU Corporate membership please email Ronsley Gardiner.

The ARMS 2009 National Conference is being held in Christchurch on 15-18 September 2009.  This year the conference theme is about evolutionary development. Research Management has changed radically in the last few years from an administrative support function to a guidance role in leading and enabling researchers to better focus their energies in applying for funding, both nationally and internationally. Session themes will complement the overall meeting theme; from Supporting the Researcher (turning research managers into research support champions) to Evaluating Research and the conditions that unleash excellence, and Through the Veil – looking to future systems for successful research. From the new Research Manager to the experienced senior, this conference will explore our past to develop a future where new technologies and ideas are harnessed to improve systems, processes and relationships with those key to our business. While being held in New Zealand, the Conference will include many speakers from Australia and topics relevant to Australian research administrators will be included to ensure a large attendance by Australian research administrators and managers.
