Welcome to the first issue of the Research Office Newsletter for September.

Many research management staff including some Research Office staff will be in Hobart this week for the annual ARMS Conference which provides the opportunity for keeping abreast of changes, training and networking.

The ARC College of Experts met last week to determine its recommendations for the funding allocations for 2009 Discovery funding.  It will be a while yet before we know the results of those deliberations although all of the applicants will be eagerly awaiting the outcomes.

We have now been using the ARIES Grants and Contracts module for some years.  OSR and ORMD have begun a process of specifying changes to the module.  While many changes have been recommended over the last few years, please continue to identify changes to the module that would make your work more efficient and if you are keen please volunteer to join the Working Party to oversee the changes.

The ARC has now released guidelines for an ERA pilot of their data systems. The ANU has yet to decide whether or not it will participate.

New ARC Discovery
Australian Laureate Fellowships
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr has announced that the ARC Australian Laureate Fellowships will replace the Federation Fellowships program

The Australian Laureate Fellowship will be open to applications from outstanding researchers of international repute, the Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme particularly encourages proposals involving Australian and non- Australian researchers currently working overseas by providing eligible Australian Laureate Fellows with Project Funding in addition to a salary supplement and salary-related (on-cost) support.

Up to 15 Australian Laureate Fellowships may be awarded for funding commencing in 2009.  Preference will be given to researchers who will play a significant, sustained leadership and mentoring role in building Australia's internationally competitive research capacity.

For more information, visit the following website: http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/laureate/laureate_default.htm

It is anticipated that this scheme will open from mid-October. Further information, including when the scheme opens, will be advised as information becomes available.

NHMRC 2009 NICS Fellowships

NHMRC Applications have opened for 2009 NICS Fellowships. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) are inviting early-to-mid career health professionals with a commitment to improve health care in Australia to apply for a 2009 NICS Fellowship.

The NHMRC, through its National Institute of Clinical Studies, has partnered with a number of key health organisations to offer ten Fellowships. In past years they have attracted a large number of very strong applications from people eager to develop careers in knowledge transfer. NICS Fellows are provided with unique opportunities through mentoring, training, national and international networking and practical support. As a result, Fellows have made a significant impact in their workplace, share their knowledge and influence evidence-based policy and practice at many levels.  For further information

Office of Commercialisation Outreach Series
Over the coming months the Office of Commercialisation will be starting a series of ‘outreach’ activities.

In September we will present a seminar at RSPhysSE explaining the role of commercialisation in the research process. Similar seminars will be presented at schools and colleges across campus.

Another part of our program will see Business Development Managers being placed in the heat of battle, with a series of one-day placements within research schools. This will be trialed later this month, with a placement in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

School Managers or College Research Administrators should contact Tom Hammond (tom.hammond@anu.edu.au or 59243) to get us involved in similar activities in your area.
