Welcome to the first Research Office newsletter for March 2009.

The ARC Discovery round is now over for another year.  Over 340 applications were submitted, a significant increase from the 319 applications submitted last year.  I would like to express my appreciation to all ANU Research Management Staff for their efforts in ensuring the smooth submission of the applications.  These applications are likely to bring some $40 million in funding to the ANU and as such are vital to the ANU's research endeavour.  Other Research Management Staff are currently working to finalise the ANU's NHMRC project grant applications.

The ARC has extended the timeline for ERA with the submission for the first cluster now due in June and the second in August.  Final guidelines for the first submissions are due out in early March.

OTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

2009 AINSE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Applications are now open for the 2009 series of the AINSE (Australian Institute for Nuclear Science and Engineering) Research Fellowships.

AINSE Research Fellowships are tenable at any AINSE member university. Applicants are required to discuss, in the first instance, their research program with a chosen institution and provide an outline of the program agreed with the sponsoring university/institution.  This year we have broadened the areas in which applications are encouraged, to include:

·         neutron scattering;

·         radiopharmaceuticals;

·         high-resolution climate records using nuclear techniques; and

·         materials engineering

AINSE Research Fellowships are offered at academic level B for outstanding and enthusiastic scientists with 3–8 years postdoctoral experience to undertake research in areas of science and technology requiring use of the OPAL research reactor other facilities at ANSTO. Fellows will be expected to build a research group in one of the AINSE member universities and be attached to ANSTO for experiments on the new, state of the art facilities on OPAL. AINSE Research Fellows receive substantial allowances for research expenses, paid through their university, as well as the travel and subsistence costs associated with visits to ANSTO, conferences and Australian universities.

The fellowships are open nationally and internationally but the recipients must be qualified for entry to the ANSTO site.

To maximise the number of scholarships the host University will contribute an amount representing 50% of the employment costs for the fellow (salary, superannuation etc).

Applications close on 31 May 2009

Strategic Japanese-Australian Cooperative Program on Marine Science – Call for Proposals

Australia and Japan have recently committed to jointly fund and administer a Marine Science program under the auspices of Australia's International Science Linkages (ISL) Program and Japan's Strategic International Cooperative Program (SICP).

The coordinating agencies responsible for this collaborative effort will be the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) on behalf of the Australian Government and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) on behalf of the Government of Japan.

DIISR and JST will jointly choose a maximum of three collaborative projects before the end of June 2009. Total funding for the Australian partner of up to AUD70,000 (GST exclusive) per project is available for two years, 2009/10 and 2010/11 (AUD35,000 per year).

A call for proposals has been released by JST for submission by 19 March 2009. Please note that applications must be sent to JST and not DIISR.

The definition of "Marine Science" for the purpose of these collaborative projects is that the research is expected to be done near the coast (including coral reefs, mud flats and seaweed beds and excluding the deep sea) or in Antarctic waters. Example areas of research include Biodiversity, Bioinformatics (e.g. drug discovery, creation of enzymes, etc), Environmental Pollution / Biological Concentration, Water Quality & Ecosystem Health, Climate Change Impacts, and Understanding Marine Microbes and Symbioses.

From the Office of Research Management Data

Publications Data Collection – HERDC collection.

We would like to remind all Deans and Directors, Business Managers and Academics that Publication information needs to be entered in ARIES by 27 March 2009.

Research books, chapters, refereed journal and conference articles published during 2008 are eligible for funding, if meeting the HERDC specifications.  This scheme is running parallel to the new (and evolving) ERA scheme but has different specifications.

Data is added to the ARIES database by Departmental Administrators throughout ANU, and checked, collated and submitted by a small team in the Research Office.

The HERDC (Higher Education Research Data Collection) data entered into ARIES by this deadline (or a new agreed time), will be checked and then submitted to DIISR before 30th June this year.  Each year ANU submits information for around 3,500 eligible Research Publications, earning us up to $4M.

If you have any further questions please contact Margaret Richardson (x57947) or Jenny Taylor (x51455),

 or our web link: http://www.anu.edu.au/ro/ORMD/Publications/publications_index.php
