Welcome to the first issue of the Research Office Newsletter for June, and my last newsletter as Director of the Research Office.  After almost 15 years in the role, next week I am moving to undertake full time research policy work for the Group of Eight and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. Dr Simon Bain will be Acting Director of the Research Office.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all staff involved in research management at the ANU for their work and their contributions to ANU's success as a research university.  I have enjoyed working with you all.

News and Notices

Research in Bionic Vision Science and Technology
In 2009, the Australian Research Council (ARC) will fund a new collaborative research initiative to develop a functional bionic eye through funding to be administered under the ARC’s Special Research Initiatives (SRI) scheme. Through its response to the 2020 Summit, the Australian Government has committed funding of $50 million over four years.

For further information about this scheme please visit http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/sri/bionic_eye.htm

Applications for funding close on Wednesday 29 July 2009, OSR deadline to be advised.

ARC Final Reports
A Final Report is due within six months of the final expenditure of an ARC funded grant. For grants that were completed at 31 December 2008 this will mean that they are due 30 June 2009.

Final Report forms for all programs have been prepared and uploaded to GAMS for projects on which ARC funding has been completed. Please note that forms have been prepared for some projects which have approved carry-overs of funding, but the completion date for the project is not affected by the availability of the form.

First-named Participants (Chief Investigators or Fellows) have responsibility for completing the form which will be available to them when they enter GAMS as an “APPLICANT”. Other Participants, including Industry Partners, can view and contribute to the form. As much as possible, data fields are pre-filled from ARC databases. Only the first-named Participant can VALIDATE the form.

The Research Office GAMS Contact should SUBMIT the form. The submission is the University’s sign-off on the grant and the Final Report. No paper copy is required by the ARC.

Final Reports for Discovery (FF, DP, D-IRD) and Linkage programs (LP, LX, LAPDC, LIEF) and earlier programs (LRG, RF, IRD, SPIRT, IREX, RIEF) are completed and submitted through GAMS.

For further information about submission of a Final Report please visit http://www.anu.edu.au/ro/OSR/Post_Award/postaward_end.php

NHMRC Development Grants & RGMS

.Kidney Health Australia - Seeding Grants
The purpose of these grants is to assist with the development of new research ideas, to form solid preliminary data to the point where they can be submitted to the NHMRC (or other) funding body for full funding. The purpose of Seeding Grants is to provide support for the Investigator to achieve ongoing substantive funding from organisation such as NHMRC. Funding of the second year is conditional upon evidence being received of an application for ongoing future funding of the same project. The application should be for a genuinely new research idea. It is not appropriate to provide seeding grants to existing projects, which have already received support from Kidney Health Australia or other granting bodies, or as part funding of a longer ongoing project. Preferred ranking will be given to applicants in the early stages of their research career applying for the first time as Chief Investigator.

Applications close: 30 June 2009
