Welcome to the first Research Office newsletter for October.

As we near the end of the year no doubt everyone is waiting for the ARC and NHMRC announcements of the results of their 2009 funding rounds followed by the opening of the 2010 funding rounds.  The months leading up to Christmas will be a busy and important time for research managers.

The ARC/NHMRC Research Seminar is taking place on 6-7 November in Canberra  ( http://www.arc.gov.au/general/research_seminar.htm ) and will include ARC sessions on 'Avoiding major pitfalls in submitting proposals', 'the Assessment Process', the new ARC Research Management System and ERA as well as NHMRC sessions on Ethics and NHMRC grants. Hopefully all research management staff involved in ARC and NHMRC will be attending.

Professor Penny Sackett from RSAA has been appointed Australia's new Chief Scientist.  I congratulate Penny on her new appointment.

The Australian Association for Institutional Research (AAIR) is holding its annual Conference from 19-21 November 2008. The AAIR is an Association interested in higher education research.  While its members are primarily staff from the Planning and Statistical areas of Universities and academics engaged in higher education research, for their 2008 Conference AAIR will have a stream focused on institutional research focused on research issues, eg. research benchmarking, RQF, DIISR reporting, ABS reporting, measuring research performance etc.  Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, and Leanne Harvey from the ARC are keynote speakers. Details can be found at http://www.leishman-associates.com.au/aair2008/

NHMRC updates

2009 NHMRC Academy – call for nominations
The NHMRC is offering distinguished researchers’ recognition as members of the NHMRC Academy and a vital advisory role in peer review from the 2009 funding round onwards.

NHMRC anticipates that the tasks performed by the Academy will, over a year, amount to approximately four weeks of full-time commitment.  NHMRC will offer each member of the Academy (through their employing institution) a supplementary grant payment of up to $10,000 to allow their research activities to be supported during this period.

Applications should include a brief statement from applicants addressing the Member Characteristics, and a full CV.

OSR deadline 31 October 2008.

AusAID: The Asia Public Sector Linkages Program (PSLP)

Invitation to Submit Activity Concepts for PSLP 2008-09 Round One

The Asia Public Sector Linkages Program aims to improve public sector capacity for governance and management for nationally determined development outcomes in selected partner Asian countries. PSLP offers departments and agencies of Australian federal, state and territory governments, as well as Australian public universities, the opportunity to compete for grant funding that will:

·         transfer capacity building skills and expertise to their public sector counterpart institutions in partner countries

·         support strengthening of sustainable development-focused public sector bilateral and regional linkages.

Grants are generally, but not necessarily, between $50,000 and $250,000. Proposed Activities generally will be self-contained and be from 3 to 24 months in duration. Activities should be long enough to transfer capacity building skills and build sustainable development-focused linkages.

In 2008/09 there will be two rounds which are scheduled for October 2008 and March 2009.
PSLP 2008-09 Round One opens on 1 October 2008 for applications in respect of APEC, APEC AI, East Timor, India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Note: Unfortunately, due to strong competing demands on available program funds, South Asia cannot be included in PSLP 2008-09 Round One, however, concept submissions are welcome for India.

Documentation necessary for participation in PSLP 2008-09 Round One is available at http://www.ausaid.gov.au/business/other_opps/pslp.cfm.

PLEASE NOTE: All submissions from ANU must be submitted together, and multiple applications for the same country/region must be ranked by ANU. Failure to submit applications together may mean disqualification. Accordingly all ANU submissions must be sent to your College Contact: http://www.anu.edu.au/ro/OSR/OSR_contacts.php for processing by cob on Friday 24 October 2008 at the latest – it would be appreciated if advice could be provided earlier that you may submit and in which country/topic.
