From the Director of the RO

This week marks the end of the financial year and the due date for the HERDC income and publication collection.  As such it has been a busy time for many College staff (with the usual end of financial year rush of contracts and ARC Discovery Rejoinders) as well as the staff of the Office of Research Excellence (ORE) and SPF.

I would like to express my appreciation to all members of the Colleges who have worked hard over the last few months in providing publication information to the ORE or have been involved in assisting in the HERDC income return.  These returns are important to the University as they are used as the basis for our DEST Block Grant Funding (RIBG, IGS, RTS and APAs).  I would also like to thank Beverley Payne and Margaret Richardson for their coordination of the publication collection and Melissa Hayes and other staff in SPF for their work on the research income collection.

After the completion of HERDC, ORE will focus on the RQF.  We are expecting the RQF guidelines to be made available very shortly and we will be seeking Colleges’ assistance in the preparation of the University’s submission.

NHMRC Program Grants

NHMRC has changed the timing for submission of applications for Program Grants.

In brief:

  • Teams wishing to apply for grants to begin on 1 January 2009, may apply either: (a) later this year (opening date of 2 July 2007 and closing date of 24 August 2007), for a decision in late 2007 (this will avoid successful applicants needing to write a back up project grant application in early 2008); or (b) by the usual time (8 February 2008).
  • Teams wishing to apply for Program Grants beginning on 1 January 2010 will need to apply in the second half of 2008.
  • All documentation relating to the second round of applications which close on 24 August 2007, including the Funding Policy, Application Form and the Guide for Applicants, are available on the NHMRC website at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/funding/apply/granttype/programs/index.htm

Detailed information regarding NHMRC Program Grants will be sent out to the Colleges as it becomes available. If you have any questions, please speak with your OSR College Contact.

NHMRC Project Grants

The NHMRC has commenced sending Spokespersons Reports and Independent Assessments to Project Grant applicants for their response. Please note: reports are sent to the CIA at the e-mail address specified by them.

 Due Date

·         The Applicant Response must be submitted within 14 days of the date the Spokespersons’ Reports and Independent Assessment are sent by the NHMRC.

·         The Applicant Response must be submitted by midnight AEST on the due date.

  • Applicant Responses not received by the due date will not be accepted.

Please speak with your OSR College Contact for more information.

ARC Discovery Project rejoinders

A reminder that ARC Discovery Project rejoinders must be ARC submitted by 5pm Monday 2nd July. Local GAMS Co-ordinators are responsible for co-ordinating their own submission process.

Linkage International ICI – Social Sciences Collaboration rejoinders

GAMS opens for rejoinder at approximately 5:30pm (AEST) Tuesday 7 August 2007 and closes 6:00pm (AEST) Tuesday 21 August 2007. Reminders and further instructions will be sent closer to the date

From the Office of the Vice Chancellor

During the oncoming months the DVC, Professor Lawrence Cram, and the PVC, Professor Mandy Thomas, will be giving presentations on the Research Quality Framework (RQF) to various sections of the University. These talks will provide background information on the genesis of the RQF, the possible impact of the RQF on the ANU and how the University is preparing itself for the assessment exercise. All members of staff are invited to attend these talks, and we would appreciate it if you could ensure that researchers in your respective areas are informed of these meetings. See below for a full schedule of the talks for your information. If members of staff from an area are unable to attend their scheduled presentation, they are more than welcome to attend one of the other talks. Any queries regarding these talks can be directed to Kylie Clark (kylie.clark@anu.edu.au; x58487).

ARIES updates

Publications

The collection of the 2006 HERDC data is complete. Thanks to everyone who wrestled publications out of academics and entered them in ARIES. We are delighted with the way publications officers collaborated with each other to enter publications having authors in several departments.

We are now developing processes for entering data for the Biosciences Review. Details will be sent to Publications Officers shortly.

Grants

Data for the ARC 2008 discovery applications has been downloaded from GAMS to ARIES. Thanks to everyone for your patience.

College research officers and grants contact people: several people have asked for their contact information to display the College, rather than Faculty School or Centre. Unfortunately we cannot do this in Aries. However Aries does allow multiple names in the "Local Business Officer" section, so you could include all College, F/S/C and department level staff involved with the grant administration.

Currency: usually the funds requested and received are recorded in Australian dollars. On the SCHEMES tab the default currency is AUD, but Aries allows other currencies. If you change the currency, you must enter all requested and awarded amounts in the selected currency. DO NOT enter the equivalent amount in AUD. When Aries displays the "total amount awarded" it will convert amounts requested and awarded across all years and all funds providers to AUD.
