Welcome to this fortnight's Research Office Newsletter.

The second congress of the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) took place between 15-19 June in Liverpool, UK. INORMS provides an opportunity for research administrators from all over the world to explore the similarities in their roles and activities, and identify the essential aspects of research management that cross national boundaries. The Congress included a wide range of parallel working sessions with topics of interest to everyone working in research administration, from those new to the professions to the most experienced managers. Sessions were organised under nine themes: research funding and funding opportunities, policy and strategy, research integrity, ethics and governance, systems and operations, management and organisation of research support, developing and supporting researchers, developing professional research managers and administrators, dissemination and translation of research, and assessing research.

The ANU Research Office was represented by Drs. Ian McMahon and Laura Dan. A report on their attendance will be presented during a forthcoming Lunchtime Seminar. The ANU representatives also presented a poster on the ANU model of research management. The poster session was designed to give Research Managers and Administrators an opportunity to present their ideas to a large and diverse international audience. The ANU poster, created by Ian McMahon, Laura Dan and Bryony Wakefield, won the first prize - showing to the world that research management is another area in which ANU excels worldwide! The poster is on display in the Research Office.

Dr. Ian McMahon will return from leave on 2nd July 2008. Dr. Simon Bain, Director of the Research Integrity is acting in his place.

Future Fellowships

Earlier this year the Australian Government announced the creation of a new scheme, Future Fellowships, to promote research in areas of critical national importance by giving world class researchers incentives to conduct their research in Australia. The scheme will encourage proposals from researchers working in areas of national priority and preference will be given to those researchers who can demonstrate a capacity to build collaboration across industry, research institutions or with other disciplines. Future Fellowships will offer four-year Fellowships of up to $140,000 a year to 1,000 Australian and international top researchers in the middle of their career. In addition, each researcher’s administering organisation will receive funding of up to $50,000 per year to support related infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs.

On Tuesday 24 June the ARC held a consultation meeting at the ANU on the proposed administrative arrangements for this scheme. Around eighty ANU researchers and research administrators attended the meeting led by Professor Margaret Clayton, Executive Director of the Future Fellowships scheme, and her team.

The discussion was focused on the Consultation paper (http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/futurefel/future_default.htm), particularly on the issues of the definition of mid-career researchers, availability of part-time fellowships, and limited number of applications by institutions.

Research Integrity Seminar
The Office of Research Integrity has available for presentation to areas a one hour seminar on research integrity.  The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research is the focal point.  The principles of the conduct of responsible research are outlined and include management of research data, supervision of research trainees, publication of research findings, authorship, peer review, conflict of interest and collaborative research.  The presentation includes mention of “unfortunate” research practices, breaches of the Code and uses some high profile research misconduct cases to illustrate how research can significantly depart from the path of the responsible conduct of research.  The seminar is delivered by Dr Simon Bain, Director ORI and is designed to be interactive
