From the Director of the Research Office

There is a fair bit happening in the Research Office!  I'm very happy to welcome John Wellard as Associate Director of the RO.  John did his PhD at RSBS, spent a post-Doctoral period at overseas universities, came back to ANU and became the DVC's Executive Officer, and then Director of the Office of Sponsored Research within the RO.  Since then he has worked in the Office of the VC, spent a year at DIISR, and returned to the OVC with principle duties relative to the Institute of Advanced Studies review.

John's research background, diversity of experience with ANU research administration processes and recent exposure to relevant DIISR processes will prove to be of considerable value to Research Office business processes and procedures. At this point in time the decision has been made to not appoint a Director of the Office of Research Excellence and John has special responsibilities with regard to that Division.

I'm also very pleased to notify you that the RO will be moving to the Innovations Building Friday 27 November. The move to a substantially better standard of building has potential to contribute significantly, along with other factors, to an elevation of the RO profile.  There are some concerns re the geographic separation of the RO from the Chancelry, given that most university Research Offices are in close proximity to their Chancelry. The plan therefore is to very significantly upgrade the space in Chancelry 10B LGF with the intent that the RO to return there after the submission of ERA, at this stage scheduled for June 2010.
