Guidelines to promote the wellbeing of animals used for scientific purposes

These guidelines, recently released by NH&MRC may be viewed at: Guidelines to promote the wellbeing of animals used for scientific purposes: The assessment and alleviation of pain and distress in research animals – The hard copy guidelines are published in A4 loose-leaf format, will be updated as required and should be read in conjunction with the 2004 NHMRC 'Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes'. The guidelines were prepared by a group consisting of AEC members, researchers, and animal welfare authorities and release of the publication followed extensive public consultation.

Part 1 provides background material to assist understanding and awareness of animal wellbeing and how it relates to scientific activities.

Part 11 provides basic strategies for planning research protocols to identify the risk of animal pain and distress, conducting research to manage the risk of animal pain and distress and reviewing research protocols to minimise animal pain and distress in future research.

Part III provides factsheets on issues to consider for specific research protocols. They have been developed with the aim of providing guidance to investigators, rather than being prescriptive.
