ARC - Grant Advice

If a project has a carryover of more than 75% and the project started at a date later than expected for example, due to a late appointment of staff, then it is satisfactory to refer to this matter using the ANU proforma approved letter from the ARC. Please use the Carryover comments field in current and future ARC End of Year Reports.

If you are using the above situation and other grant money has also been carried over, it is satisfactory to refer to the reason already provided in the Progress Report.  Please provide a reason for the carryover of other funds for example give a Breakdown of project equipment, along with the reference to the approved letter for the late start. (i.e. two reasons in the one letter)

Human Research Ethics and Qualitative Methods

The 2007 National Statement defines qualitative research as involving disciplined enquiry that examines people’s lives, experiences and behaviours, and the stories and meanings individuals ascribe to them.  It can also investigate organisational functioning, relationships between individuals and groups, and social environments.

This approach to research can involve the studied use and collection of a variety of empirical materials such as case studies, personal experience, life stories, interviews, observations and cultural texts.

The commonly used approaches to data collection in qualitative research are:

  • Interviews
  • Life story or oral history
  • Focus groups
  • Observation
  • Archival research
  • On-line research
  • Action research

For more information regarding qualitative methods, please read the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) Pg 25-28.
