The ANU's planning retreat for 2008 was held at Bowral earlier in February.  The key items for discussion included the Government's plans for a Review of Innovation and its likely approach to a replacement RQF and to the funding of higher education; and ANU research performance and strategies for improving our performance at obtaining research funding.  The presentations from the retreat (including outcomes of the focus groups) should shortly be placed on the Vice-Chancellor's website.

The ANU is planning to actively engage in the policy debates regarding research in the coming months.  To assist in coordination the ANU's responses, the ANU has established a Government Liaison unit headed by Jane O'Dwyer.  Areas should contact Jane for advice on Government liaison and when she need to be informed of approaches to Government by academic staff in your area.

Go8 FRLP Governance Module

As mentioned in the Research Office section of this Newsletter the Go8 Future Research Leaders Program is currently in development at the ANU and across the Group of Eight Universities.  The ORI will be  responsible for trialling the Governance and Compliance module, Protecting Yourself, Your Research, and Your University in the Ross Hohnen Room Friday 18th April from 1pm to 5pm.

This module examines the context in which research operates and the resultant requirements for research practice.  The need to operate within a university-specific framework of governance, responsible research practice and statutory and regulatory requirements is also explored.  Participants will have an opportunity to explore the nature of compliance as a partnership in research governance, rather than an imposed requirement.  In all disciplines across universities, researchers enjoy important academic freedoms and privileges, including freedom of inquiry, the right to disseminate the results of research inquiry free of institutional censorship, freedom to challenge conventional thought and the privilege of conducting research in areas requiring public trust and support. With this freedom comes the responsibility to ensure that research meets the highest scientific and ethical standards.

Ideally, integrity and experience combine in good research and great research leaders.
The first hour will be a joint seminar with other university participants facilitated by the Office of Research Integrity with a working title How to Promote Research Integrity and the Responsible Conduct of Research. This part of the workshop will consider some high-profile cases for discussion.
The second 2-3-hour part of the workshop will cover the background and issues stemming from consideration of the scenarios proposed in many of the activities that are distributed through this module. These open-ended scenarios, with the common theme How would you choose and defend your point of view? are expected to lead to some interesting points of view and debate.
The ORI is seeking 25-30 participants for this course and promises a lively and interesting session.

ARIES Human Research Ethics Training Courses
ARIES Human Research Ethics training courses continue on a weekly basis on Tuesdays in the Ross Hohnen Room.  Experience to date is that attendance at a training session considerably facilitates subsequent on-line application process.  Courses occur the following times during the remainder of February and March:
February 26: 10am-11am
March 4: 2pm-3pm
March 11: 10am-11am
March 18: 2.30pm-3.30pm
March 25: 10am-11am
