The fundamental decision point in commercialisation is whether to hold off publishing your research in order to protect it. This is often the most difficult decision to take, as at the point of invention your picture of what your discovery means, who might be interested, and what is already out there will not always be clear.

This seminar will draw from examples in providing tips on how to identify if your research is patentable, and what you should consider in following the protection now and the publishing later path.

Research Development Forum
Date: Wednesday, 17 Sept 2008
Time: 10.30am – 12.00 noon
Venue: McDonald Room, Menzies Library

NHMRC Partnership Projects have opened:

NHMRC Partnership Projects are designed to support research that addresses the delivery, organisation and funding of programs and services that affect health. NHMRC Partnership Projects are designed to encourage researchers and partner organisations to form alliances to identify research projects, conduct research, interpret its findings and promote the use of those findings to influence the design and evaluation of health and health care policy and practice.  This initiative will fund new and existing partnerships to conduct research of high scientific quality that can offer new insights to address complex and difficult questions that affect Australians’ health and health care.

The Go8 European Fellowship scheme.
The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000.
The Fellowships are open to eligible researchers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.

The Go8 European Fellowship scheme recognises the importance of international contacts for early career researchers. It is envisaged that Fellows will continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions.

You are eligible to apply to be a Fellow if you:

  • have completed a PhD less than five years prior to application for the Fellowship;
  • are under 40 years of age at the time of application;
  • are a citizen of one of the designated countries listed above;
  • reside in one of the designated countries listed above (it need not be the same country as your citizenship);

Go8 Future Research Leadership Program

The final three modules of the Go8 Future Research Leadership Program to be offered at ANU in 2008 have just been announced. The Program commenced at the beginning of this year, and the response from academics who have participated so far has been great. The nine intensive training modules of the Program seek to prepare participants for future roles as managers of research grants and projects and leaders of research teams. Modules include online learning material plus a face-to-face workshop. They are targeted at early to mid-career researchers who are in, or are working towards research leadership roles. There is no cost involved.

The final three modules that will be run at the ANU in 2008 are:

Module 1 - Research Strategy and Planning - Workshop: Tuesday 9 September 2008, 1-5pm

Effective research must be carefully planned to achieve the best outcomes. This module explores the links between your university's overall research strategy, your own research, the scoping and conceptualising of the project prior to the research commencing and research project management.

Module 6 - Grant and Contract Administration - Workshop: Friday 26 September 2008, 1-5.00pm

Winning a research grant or contract is a real buzz! However there are fundamental administrative requirements that need addressing to ensure success in achieving stated outcomes and managing the administration of your grant. This module has been designed to provide practical assistance to research leaders.

Module 8 - Project Closeout - Workshop: Monday 20 October 2008, 1-5pm

A good project close out and review process is reliant on successful processes for setting goals, priorities, project definitions, scope, schedules and budgets as well as having effective controls for monitoring and tracking changes during the life of the project.

For further information please go to http://anu.frlp.edu.au.

Due to the high demand and the limited number of spaces available please register for the program as soon as possible by contacting nicki.read-jones@anu.edu.au.

I do hope you are able to join us for this exiting and ground breaking initiative and look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Innovation ANU 2008 update and results

After four months, over one hundred participants, over twenty presenters, mentors, advisors, judges and organisers, twenty pitch and executive summary submissions, and seven finalists presenting their full and formal business plans, the inaugural Innovation ANU closed on the 4th August with a formal dinner and awards ceremony at The Boathouse.

At the dinner each of the finalists provided a summary presentation on their innovations for the benefit of the assembled audience and media, before Professor Lawrence Cram announced the winner of the major award to be Dr Steven Weiss and Cardishield, a start-up pharma company re-developing an existing drug for treating heart attack.

A second major award was shared by Photos Inkorporated, an online photo sharing and printing business (www.photos.com.au) from PhD students Sabrina Caldwell and Mark Krivo; and One Corp, a team of business, engineering and law undergraduates (Jing, Katy, Jonathan and Vicky) developing a method for secure receipt management.

Alice Giles and Liena Lacey from The School of Music received a social impact award for their plan for Harp Centre Australia. HCA is at the centre of a community Alice and Liena are building in Australia and internationally around the appreciation of the harp. Visit their upcoming Australian Harp Festival 26-29 September (www.anu.edu.au/music/harp/) to become a part.

It is a testament to the breadth and depth of innovation at the ANU, that the award winners and the finalists covered such a diverse range of potential businesses, with every ANU College represented in the final submissions, and the plans being generated by a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students and research staff.

The finalists also included Dr Steven Micklethwaite and Dr Joe Kurtz’s Fault Technology, a research and consulting venture to provide mining companies with expertise in locating gold deposits through examining earthquake fault lines; PhD student Scott Flower’s A Capital Idea, a business developing a dosage counter and audit patch for asthma inhalers to provide asthmatics with comfort and security that their medication is active; and Serafina, a commercialisation strategy for Dr Felix Schill’s PhD research on the communication, navigation and control of swarms of small autonomous submarines (www.serafina.com.au)

The Innovation ANU 2008 program was run through the Office of Commercialisation with the support of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and a team of PhD students from the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Thank you to Lachlan Blackhall, Fiona Beck, Priscilla Kan-John, Srinivas Sridharan and Tyler Summers for all their hard work and dedication in making this inaugural program happen.

Innovation ANU 2009 will commence in March next year, but to register your interest in participating as an idea generator or as a team member please feel free to drop us a line now to InnovationANU@anu.edu.au, or karen.jackson@anu.edu.au.
