From the Director of the RO

In order to support the ANU’s RQF process, the Research Office has appointed Beverley Payne as the RQF Project Manager.  Beverley will be supported by a small RQF Team within the Research Office.  Margaret Richardson will back-fill Beverley in providing support for the HERDC Publications Collection.

The ANU RQF Panels have begun the work of defining the ‘Groups’ of researchers who will be reported to DEST in our RQF submission.

Commencing this week, the RQF Team will begin emailing researchers asking them to update their research outputs in ARIES.  The emails will go out in groups over the next couple of weeks commencing with Chemistry and Physics.  Researchers will be asked to contact their HERDC publication contact for help with publications and RFCD codes and their College Research Management Officers for help with grant information.

The ‘final’ RQF Specifications have just been released.  This will allow us to proceed with greater certainty in our planning for the RQF.

The Human Ethics and RQF modules of ARIES are now ‘live’.  My thanks to all staff, especially those in ORI, ORMD and CIS, who have been involved in the development of these modules.

Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

NHMRC, ARC and Universities Australia recently released the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.  The purpose of the Code is to guide institutions and researchers in responsible research practices.  In describing good practice, the Code promotes integrity in research for researchers and explains what is expected of researchers by the community.  In providing advice on how to manage departures from best practice, the Code assists researchers, administrators and the community in this important matter.

The Code consists of two main parts:

Part A describes the principles and practice for encouraging the responsible conduct of research, for institutions and researchers and consists of a number of sections:

  • General principles of responsible research
  • Management of research data and primary materials
  • Supervision of research trainees
  • Publication and dissemination of research findings
  • Authorship
  • Peer review
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Collaborative research across institutions

Part B includes breaches of the Code, research misconduct, and the framework for resolving allegations.  Sections are:

  • Breaches of the Code and misconduct in research
  • Concepts and definitions
  • Responsibilities
  • The framework for resolving allegations

Changes to Aries

(1) Human Ethics module

The ARIES Human Ethics module is now operational. Researchers seeking approvals should enter their protocol directly into Aries. A 'how to' guide is on the web at http://www.anu.edu.au/ro/ORI/HumanEthicsQuickGuide.pdf

(2) RQF module

The RQF module has been updated to allow the full range of processing that we are aware of from DEST specifications. Changes include the capacity to create panels and groups, the capacity for researchers to make changes to RFCD codes on locked records and a full range of reports by panel and group. It is expected that Researchers will be asked to examine and update their records starting later in this month.

(3) Grants module

When creating or updating a MILESTONE, the data entry for "milestone completed" allows you to select Oth(er). This will enable you to ignore some milestones which are not yet complete but where you don't want it listed in your housekeeping reports.
