As mentioned in the last Research Office newsletter, Ann Goldwater is now on maternity leave and Anne-Marie Hicks-Desvignes is the Acting Director of the Office of Sponsored Research. The Australasian Research Management Society is a Society which promotes the profession of research management and administration. The ANU is a corporate member of the Society and all research management staff at the ANU are entitled to be members. If you wish to be registered as a member and receive ARMS emails and newsletters please contact Ronsley Gardner (Email: Ronsley.Gardner@anu.edu.au) in the Research Office. The Society holds an annual meeting which provides a great opportunity for research managers to keep up to date on research management issues and to network with other research managers. Details of this year's conference, which will be held from 3-5 September at Hobart, can be found at http://www.arms2008.com.au/

Group of Eight Future Research Leaders Program (FRLP) Last Friday, we successfully ran the first FRLP module at the ANU, Commencement & Collaboration. A pleasing turnout of 18 people interacted, shared stories, and was entertained and inspired by invited speakers. This Friday, we will launch Module 3: Governance & Compliance, a module that has been developed at Melbourne University and adapted to the ANU. Director of the Office of Research Integrity, Dr Simon Bain, will facilitate proceedings and pass on his wealth of knowledge on the ethical and moral management of research projects. Places are still open for the Induction Module: Settling In to the ANU. This is designed specifically to researchers who have recently commenced employment at ANU. It provides guidance in negotiating the ‘research environment’ at the university – where to go to seek project funding, mentoring, support, research advice, and all other aspects of university that are often tucked away and difficult for a newcomer to find. We recommend that all recently-appointed staff, and those finding it difficult to negotiate the terrain of ANU, sign up for this module. The workshop for this module will be held in the morning of Wednesday, April 30. There is no cost involved for any of the modules. Each module stands alone, and does not require the completion of other modules. To confirm interest for any of the modules, or for further information, please email Tom.Hammond@anu.edu.au. Further information regarding the FRLP at the ANU can be accessed here.
USA government funded grant opportunities Grants.Gov acts as a portal for submitting applications to those USA granting bodies which receive government funding (there are other USA electronic systems which operate independently). . ("Grants offered by Grants.gov are an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient to carry out a public purpose of support or stimulation authorized by a law of the United States.") Currently we are mostly involved in grants where a US institution is the lead institution. The Grants.Gov Newsletter concentrates on Grants.Gov processes. In the latest newsletter there is an email sign up option to receive daily notification of all new grant opportunities or criteria defined notices. Please feel free to read the newsletter itself but, more importantly, go to the email subscription page and select "All Grant Notices" in order to sign up for daily notifications and/or "Notices Based on Advanced Criteria" for less frequent notifications : Newsletter: http://www.grants.gov/assets/GrantSpringNewsletter08.pdf Subscription page: http://www.grants.gov/applicants/email_subscription.jsp A useful link for applicants is: http://www.grants.gov/applicants/applicants.jsp (note that the ANU is already registered with Grants.Gov). A number of other overseas granting bodies use electronic application systems. David Lewis is developing a web page providing more information on the other UK and USA systems for which we are currently registered. Contact David Lewis with any queries (RO.ITHelp@anu.edu.au or ext. 56736).
