Late June-early July has been a very busy period for the RO members who provide research data to those that require it. Our energetic Publications team have been involved in putting together the HERDC data collection.  There was some tendency towards late entries which kept the team working until the 11th hour and involved an expanded team into which other RO members were coopted in the final days.  The total 2008 weighted publications 3045 were up 5% on 2007 figures and sincere congratulations to all involved.  I had a chance to gain insight our into the very valuable work our Special Purpose Funds staff in B&Fdo regarding HERDC research income and am pleased to report that final figure was substantially up on the 2007 return.

Our ORE personnel are currently in heavy demand with the VC's spreadsheet, with returns to the Go8 and at the same time with internal requests, all it seems with a July 31 deadline. We are currently undertaking an assessment of the future likely demands on ORE and all indications are that this is an area of growth for us.  The ERA team is assembling the pilot Humanities-Creative Arts cluster with the electronic deadline 21 August. The format of the Creative Arts material is proving to pose an interesting challenge. The Business Solutions Group  is involved in all aspects of the implementation  and ongoing function of research information systems and I am very mindful of how reliant we are on the various ARIES modules and that the ARIES team are very much concerned with the coordination of new module development, everyday problem solving and the implementation of changes and additions essential to research administration at ANU. When we considerer that ARIES function is essential to Grants, Publications, Human Research Ethics, Animal Ethics, ERA, and down the track, Commercialisation and R-DNA Ethics, it becomes very apparent how dependent on the system's continuing successful function. BSG is also involved in the essential task of desktop support and DOI liaison.

Future Leaders Program

The next Future Research Leaders Program, Intellectual Property and Commercialisation, will be held from 1.00 – 4.30 pm, Tuesday 28 July, in the McDonald Room, Menzies Library.

The module aims to:

·         to provide university researchers with an introduction to commercialisation.

·         An emphasis is placed on ensuring the researcher gains a broad understanding and appreciation of the processes involved in identifying, protecting and packaging innovations for the market place.

·         Such an understanding should provide a critical base for researchers wishing to participate in and appreciate the complex commercialisation process.

ANU Linkage Pilot Scheme 2009

The Vice-Chancellor is offering another round of the Linkage Pilot projects scheme;

2009 ANU Linkage Pilot Project Fund.

This internal fund seeks to identify ANU researchers who are able to demonstrate a potentially viable pilot project involving one or more industry partners which can then be developed to apply for ARC Linkage Project funding within the next year.

Mentoring support will be available, both for the researchers and their local area administrators, to ensure that the budding applications have the greatest internal support possible for success with the ARC.

The guiding principles for the applicants will be:

1.      To develop collaborative research alliances with organisations outside the University;

2.      To encourage innovative research;

3.      To enhance the ANU’s industry-oriented research, and our ability to provide a fertile training ground for future researchers and industry leaders.

Funding Guidelines and application form are available at:

Round opened Monday 29 June 2009 and closes 31 July 2009
