As no doubt most of you will be aware, November/December is one of the busiest times for research managers with the funding results and acceptances for 2009 grants and the beginning of the 2010 funding rounds.  This year is especially busy with the ARC having introduced a major new funding scheme in Future Fellowships.  It is particularly important that the ANU maximises its performance in Future Fellowships as it represents a major injection of new funds into research in Australia.

November also means that the launch of the next HERDC Publications collection, with the HERDC Publications morning tea occurring on Wednesday 26 November.  I would urge all involved in the HERDC Publications Collection to attend.  If you wish to attend please contact Margaret Richardson.

The ARC/NHMRC research administrators’ seminar has now passed. Most people attending found the ARC component of the workshop informative and interesting especially as it covered the new schemes of Future and Laureate Fellowships and ERA

European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research

COST (European Cooperation in the fiend of Scientific and Technical Research) has launched a call for proposals on actions contributing to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal development in Europe. Proposals playing a precursor role for other European programmes and/or initiated by early-stage researchers are especially welcome.

COST is organised in nine broad domains (biomedicine and molecular biosciences; chemistry and molecular sciences and technologies; earth system science and environmental management; food and agriculture; forests, their products and services; individuals, society, culture and health; information and communication technologies; materials, physical and nanosciences; transport and urban development).

Proposers are invited to locate their topic within one domain. However, inter-disciplinary proposals not fitting readily into a single domain are particularly welcome and will be assessed separately.

COST does not itself fund research, but supports networking activities such as meetings, conferences, short-term scientific exchanges and outreach activities. It receives financial support for its coordinating activities under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

New NSF Graduate Fellows Nordic Research Opportunity

We are pleased to announce a new international research opportunity, available as a Supplemental Award, for NSF Graduate Research Fellows. Through a pilot collaboration, the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Research Council of Norway (RCN), and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES) will support on a competitive basis research visits of 2-12 months in Norway, or of 3-12 months in Finland, respectively. This international research opportunity is intended to enrich the GRF experience by exposing Fellows to leading Nordic scientists and institutions, thus enabling them to develop early-career collaborations with European research partners. Results are expected to expand opportunities for innovation and add an international dimension to GRF research projects.

Please read the announcement (Dear Colleague Letter) on the NSF Website at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09011/nsf09011.jsp for further details and how to apply.

The Supplement Request Deadline is January 15, 2009. Announcement of supplement awards will be made in early April, 2009. Successful applicants may commence their research stay as early as June 1, 2009 by mutual consent with the host Nordic institution.

We hope you give this funding opportunity to establish collaborations with Nordic colleagues serious consideration as your research programs develop. There is a short time line for the 2009 competition.
