The ARC has recently released its consultation paper on Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA).  The paper can be found  on the ERA website at http://www.arc.gov.au/era/consultation.htm

ERA, which replaces the RQF aims to:

·         identify excellence across the full spectrum of research activity

·         compare Australia’s research effort against international benchmarks

·         create incentives to improve the quality of research

·         identify emerging research areas and opportunities for further development.

The ARC is calling for submissions on the Consultation Paper by 30 June 2008.  If your area makes a submission directly to the ARC, the DVC's Office would appreciate a copy of the submission being sent to EO.DVC@anu.edu.au.  Also if there are comments on the Consultation Paper that you think the University should take into account please contact Beverley Payne (X54182).

Following the general consultation process, the ARC will establish a Metrics Working Group and begin targeted consultation on the first clusters to be evaluated - the Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences and the Humanities and Creative Arts.

Future Fellowships Consultation Paper

The Future Fellowships Consultation Paper was released by Senator Kim Carr the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in May. The Consultation Paper outlines the proposed administrative arrangements for the Future Fellowships scheme. The ARC is now seeking comments and feedback on the specific issues outlined in the Consultation Paper.

The proposed Future Fellowships scheme aims to promote research in areas of critical national importance by giving world class researchers incentives to conduct their research in Australia, and to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers.

Over a five-year period (2009 -2013), Future Fellowships will offer four-year Fellowships of up to $140,000 a year to 1,000 Australian and international top researchers in the middle of their career. In addition, each researcher's administering organisation will receive funding of up to $50,000 per year to support related infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs.

ARC Future Fellowships Scheme Page: http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/futurefel/future_default.htm

ARC Schemes

ARC Final Reports
Final Reports are required by the ARC at the end of June; or within six months of the final expenditure on the grant account, or within six months of the final carry over of funds approved by the ARC – whichever is the latter (unless the ARC has agreed to another submission date).

Researchers should be aware that the ARC will note if the Final Report is not submitted on time, or if it is not satisfied with the outcomes of the Project. The ARC will take this into account in the assessment of future proposal submissions. Researchers should also note that Proposals submitted under any ARC program may be deemed ineligible if Final Reports are outstanding.

The ARC has automatically completed many of the basic details of the form simplifying the process. If any of this information is incorrect/out of date and you cannot change it please contact ARCPostAward@anu.edu.au (X59183) for assistance.

Further information about Final Reports can be found on the ARC website and the OSR’s website.

Feedback on ARC Funding Rules

The ARC will be reviewing the Funding Rules and supporting documentation for each of its schemes over the next few months and is again seeking comment and feedback from interested parties on the current versions of the ARC's Funding Rules, Instructions to Applicants and Funding Agreement documents.

This feedback will be taken into consideration as part of deliberations by the ARC concerning the rules and documentation for future funding rounds.

The ARC is particularly interested in pursuing the following objectives in reviewing and revising these documents:

- the use of "plain language" - including ensuring the documents contain sufficient detail to assist applicants in applying for funding and, in general, ensuring that the documents are accessible, "readable" and structured in a meaningful way;

- promoting consistency and using common terminology where possible in relation to the various schemes funded by the ARC;

- ensuring the eligibility criteria are robust, up to date and relevant; and

- facilitating ease of use and interpretation of relevant rules/eligibility criteria.

The ARC requires that one response per institution be submitted. For the ANU submission, please provide your comments to your OSR College Contact by cob Monday, 16th June 2008 http://www.anu.edu.au/ro/info/contact_college.php
