From the Director of the RO

Welcome to the first issue of the Newsletter for July.

The Go8 Research Office Directors meet regularly to discuss issues of common interest.  At the last meeting in May the issues discussed included ARC/NHMRC guidelines, the RQF, the new National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, the Proposed national system for multi-jurisdictional ethical and scientific approvals in human research, RO benchmarking, Go8 data exchange, the Go8 Research Leadership Project and research IT systems.  The Group makes representation to the ARC and NHMRC and other agencies on behalf of the Go8 universities, for example, by making a Go8 submission to the ARC on the details of the ARC draft program guidelines.  If there are any issues you would like to see discussed by the Group please let me know.

The Research Office's lunchtime seminar series continues to be well attended.  Don't forget to provide feedback on other topics you would like to see covered to Karen Burke.

DEST has released the draft RQF specifications and the ANU is currently preparing its comments.  As outlined in the last newsletter the DVC and the PVC Research are undertaking a series of workshops on the ANU's management of the RQF.  Please take the opportunity to attend one of these sessions if at all possible.

ARIES Grant Module and Ethics Clearances

You will notice that the ARIES Grants module has a Clearances tab used to record relevant clearances.  Please ensure that details regarding clearances concerning Human Ethics, Animal Ethics, DNA Ethics and ionising or non-ionising radiation are entered here. If applied for but not yet approved you may insert "pending". However to ensure necessary compliance it is important that all clearances are recorded here.

Human Ethics: Changes of Personnel Within an Approved Study

If personnel change within a study that has received Human Ethics clearance, then this is deemed a variation and needs to be forwarded to the Chair for approval, via the Human Ethics Officer, Yolanda Shave (ext 57945).

Animal Ethics: Changes of Personnel Within an Approved Study

New personnel must sign the signature page of the approved proposal to state that they have read the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.  A copy of this should be forwarded, with a note from the Primary Investigator approving this, to the Animal Ethics Officer, Pauline Pilcher (ext 53721).
