From the Director of the Research Office

Welcome to this fortnight's Research Office Newsletter.

The ANU has recently hosted a successful NHMRC Research Forum conducted by Warwick Anderson, the CEO of NHMRC, and an ARC Consultation on the Future Fellowships.  In addition ANU staff have recently contributed to consultations on ERA and ARC Program Guidelines.

We will shortly be hosting an ARC Roadshow on their new grants management system.  Further details will be provided when they become available.

The ARC has also called for registrations for the annual ARC/NHMRC Research Administrator's Seminar to be held in November. I encourage all College Research Office staff to register and attend.

Registrations are also open for the ARMS annual conference to be held in Hobart in September.  The Conference and its associated workshops provide an excellent means for research management staff to keep up to date as well as providing training for staff new to research management.  I would encourage College research management staff to attend.

The ANU has successfully submitted our HERDC income and publications collections.  I would like to thank all staff involved in providing the income and publication data which is vital to the ANU's research funding and reputation especially in light of the late advice by DIISR of the final income guidelines.

The following staffing changes have recently occurred in the Research Office. I am pleased to advise that Ann Goldwater has been confirmed as Director OSR. I would like to thank Anne-Marie Hicks-Desvignes for acting as Director OSR while the recruitment process for the position was completed.  As Ann remains on maternity leave, the three Senior Research Development Officers in the OSR will work closely together as a management team for the Office, with the formal acting in the position being rotated between them.  Bryony Wakefield will be acting Director OSR for the next two months, followed by Laura Dan.  Tom Hammond has moved within the Research Office from looking after the FRLP to becoming a member of the Office of Commercialisation.

Research Integrity Seminar
The Office of Research Integrity has available for presentation to areas a one hour seminar on research integrity.  The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research is the focal point.  The principles of the conduct of responsible research are outlined and include management of research data, supervision of research trainees, publication of research findings, authorship, peer review, conflict of interest and collaborative research.  The presentation includes mention of “unfortunate” research practices, breaches of the Code and uses some high profile research misconduct cases to illustrate how research can significantly depart from the path of the responsible conduct of research.  The seminar is delivered by Dr Simon Bain, Director ORI and is designed to be interactive.

ARIES Data Entry - Requested vs Awarded Amounts

ARIES Housekeeping tasks have identified the following issue. In some records the amount requested entered in the Schemes tab does not match the requested amount in the Funding Amounts tab, this makes the data comparison for requested vs awarded amounts difficult and incorrect.

In order for the clean comparison of data for requested vs awarded amounts in ARIES, the following process MUST be followed:

When you are entering an application in ARIES;

the Schemes tab must be completed with the Funds Provider and relevant Scheme added and all requested budget years and their amounts entered.

- Do this even when selecting Funds Provider not in ARIES, amounts are copied across to the correct scheme by RO BSG when we create the new Provider and scheme.

- Check relevant currency associated with the Scheme eg. If entering amounts in Yen ensure 'Japan (Yen)' is selected in the Currency drop-down menu.

When updating awarded amounts in the Funding Amounts tab:

- Upload requested amounts (and their years), by selecting the 'Upload' button.

- Edit each budget year and enter awarded funds in the same currency that was selected for the requested amounts.

- DO NOT over write the requested amounts, if these amounts are incorrect you will need to contact RO BSG and we will assist in fixing these.

What if?

I selected the wrong scheme /provider?

Ensure that all requested amounts and/or awarded amounts are correct and then advise RO BSG. RO.IThelp@anu.edu.au to correct the scheme / provider.

Different funding years...

On the occasion that a grant is extended or the requested years differ from the awarded years (DOES NOT refer to Carry forwards) eg application requested funding for 2008-2010 but grant is awarded for period 2009-2011, please seek advice from RO BSG via: RO.IThelp@anu.edu.au

Requested amounts are wrong?

Update in Schemes tab, if you encounter error message/s contact RO BSG via: RO.IThelp@anu.edu.au

Entering Fee for service on a consultancy with unknown amounts?
Enter $1 for each requested budget year in the Schemes tab. This MUST be updated when the contract has been signed off and the actual amount is known, before entering awarded amounts in the Funding Amounts tab. (The requested and awarded amounts will match under this circumstance).
