From the Director of the RO

Welcome to the first issue of the newsletter for August!

We are delighted to advise that Professor Tony McMichael, Director of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, has been named as an Australia Fellow by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

With his Australia Fellowship funding, Professor McMichael will extend his research on how climatic variations affect health risks. This will include studies in Australia and neighbouring countries to identify changes in risks of infections and other diseases due to ongoing climate change. Particular attention will be paid to rural Australia, where the prospect of longer-term drying raises many questions about health risks and the adaptive responses that communities and government should undertake.

Professor McMichael and colleagues will also pursue further research into the environmental influences on autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis and childhood (type 1) diabetes. The roles of solar ultraviolet and vitamin D in reducing risks of these diseases is a major focus of this research.  We would like to congratulate Professor McMichael on winning this prestigious Fellowship.

Research Quality Framework

There has been quite a bit of activity relating to the Research Quality Framework in the last few weeks and we have updated the ANU RQF web page as well as making it easier to find by linking it directly from the Research Office main page.

·          The revised submission specifications have been released although they are still in draft form. A copy of them has been added to the ANU's RQF web page

·          Presentations to local areas by Lawrence Cram and Mandy Thomas are continuing and there was a briefing for Publications Officers and Departmental Administrators on Wednesday 8 August

·          We are moving into full data collection mode. Over the next couple of weeks we will be asking academics to log into ARIES, check the data we already have about their grants and publications and arrange for any necessary updates. Detailed instructions will be on the website and a link to them included in an email to academics..

·          We have established an internal RQF address: RQF@anu.edu.au

Do you want to run a report which omits SPF accounts for the Scheme: “Various, SPF Use Only”?

In the Main Grants tab Identification 1 is used to separate these grants – they are all identified as: “Discretionary Q Funds”

Here is one neat way to omit them from your report.

In the following example, select:

Field header:                 Main Grant tab

Field description:            Identification 1

Multiple selection            No/Yes – choose Yes

On the next screen tick almost everything BUT DO NOT TICK:

“Discretionary Q Funds”, “Animal”, DNA” and “Human”
