From the Director of the Research Office

Following the change of Government on the weekend, the Sector is awaiting advice from the new Government on the arrangements for the RQF.  In the meantime, the ANU is continuing to work on essential components of the RQF and is continuing to collect research output data for the RQF which will also be useful to the ANU for future planning.  The DVC will shortly send out an email to all academic staff about the RQF.  In addition an email will shortly come out from the Research Office reminding academic staff to enter information about their publications and other research outputs in ARIES.

A meeting of College Research Managers and the RO was held last Tuesday.  The meeting discussed the establishment of a network of areas involved in research development (including College ROs, ANU Enterprise, MAC, RO (including OSR and OC) and the Business Development Office), ways of measuring research management capabilities across the ANU with reporting as part of the ANU's Research Plan and ways of ensuring quality application checking across the University.  The next meeting of the Group will be held in late January.

NEWS

2007 ANU Linkage Pilot Rd 2 Project Fund

Application Deadline: Friday 14 December 2007

ANU’s collaborations with Industry have been waning over recent years. This internal fund seeks to identify ANU researchers who are able to demonstrate a potentially viable pilot project involving one or more industry partners which can then be developed to apply for ARC Linkage funding within the next year.

Mentoring support will be available, both for the researchers and their local area administrators, to ensure that the budding applications have the greatest internal support possible for success with the ARC.

The guiding principles for the applicants will be:

  • To develop collaborative research alliances with organisations outside the University;
  • To encourage innovative research;
  • To enhance the ANU’s industry-oriented research, and our ability to provide a fertile training ground for future researchers and industry leaders.

The fund will be open for applications from 20th November, 2007 until 14th December, 2007.

Information regarding this scheme, Funding Guidelines and application form, and the submission process, are available on the Research Office website.  Please note there have been some changes from Rd 1.

ARC Discover Projects 2009 Applications are Now Open

Human Ethics and Data Collection

Data are pieces of information and come from a diversity of sources e.g. what people say in interviews, questionnaires, clinical information, observations, and social information.

The National Statement (2007) talks in terms of data being collected, stored or disclosed in three mutually exclusive forms:

·         Individually identifiable data

where the identity of a specific individual can reasonably ascertained;

·         Re-identifiable data

from which identifiers have been removed and replaced by a code, but it remains possible to re-identify a specific individual by, for example, using the code or linking different data sets;

·         Non-identifiable data

which have never been labelled with individual identifiers or from which identifiers have been permanently removed, and by means of which no specific individual can be identified.  A subset of non-identifiable data are those that can be linked with other data so it can be known that they are about the same data subject, although the person’s identity remains unknown.

With regards to re-identifiable data, personal identifiers replaced by a code, must be recorded in a manner that is password protected and stored separately from primary data.

The 2007 National Statement avoids the term “de-identified data” as its meaning does not precisely differentiate between re-identifiable and non-identifiable data.

In general the minimum recommended period for retention of data is 5 years from the date of publication.  For most clinical trials, retaining research data for 15 years or more may be necessary.  For areas such as gene therapy, research data must be retained permanently (e.g. patient records).  If work has community or heritage value, research data should be kept permanently, preferably within a national collection.
