From the Director of the Research Office

As mentioned in the last RO Newsletter, Fiona Nelms has now left the ANU to take up a new position in Melbourne.  She has made a vital contribution to the commercialisation of ANU research both in ANUTECH/ANU Enterprise as well as in her role as Director of the Office of Commercialisation.  We wish her well in her new position.  I expect to be able to announce arrangements to cover Fiona’s departure in the next newsletter.  Commercialisation contacts in the Office are: Karen Jackson (Physical Sciences), Victor Pantano (Engineering), Karen Edwards and Gavin Clydesdale (Life Sciences) and Bev Cooper (Patents).

In the last newsletter I commented on the importance of the work of research development officers in supporting the ARC Discovery 2009 Round.  My comments should also be taken to apply to the support provided by research development officers to the NHMRC applications which are equally important to those parts of the University engaged in medical research.

2007 Linkage Pilot Rd 2 Outcomes
Congratulations to those who have been awarded funding for the Linkage Pilot Rd 2, this was an immensely successful round with 36 highly competitive applications and up to $100K being awarded to a variety of projects. It is expected another round of the Pilot scheme for 2008 will be conducted due to the success of the previous rounds. Thanks again to all those who participated in this scheme. In light of this success please consider completing Linkage Projects Evaluation Survey detailed below.

REMINDER: Linkage Projects Evaluation Survey : ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF and RESEARCHERS
As previously announced, the PVC and the Office of Sponsored Research are inviting ANU administrative staff and researchers to comment on the ARC Linkage Project Scheme by answering some short questions in an on-line Apollo survey. Your responses to the survey will help us to evaluate the University's response to the Scheme, and assist us to add value to the administration of the ANU's ARC Linkage Project submissions.

The Apollo Form opened at 9am Monday 14 January 2008, and will be closed at 5pm Friday 1 February 2008. The 12-question survey will take approximately 15 minutes of your time to complete.

For all participants, please accept our thanks for agreeing to complete this evaluation of the Linkage Project Scheme. Your participation will be completely anonymous with the exception of any identifying information you choose to provide.

Please access the survey at the address: https://apollo.anu.edu.au/default.asp?pid=2523, using your HORUS login details, then press the "Begin" button to start the survey.

OSR Website Update
As some of you may have noticed there have been some ongoing updates and changes to the OSR website. We hope these changes will make access to NHMRC/ARC funding information, tools such as the DP09 Gold Application, FAQ's, RDF and Lunchtime Seminar dates easier.

The OSR aims to review and develop our website further in the latter half of the year, however, in the interim these changes and updates will be ongoing.

From the Office of Research Management Data

ARIES

ANU senior management is examining the university's research collaboration with researchers in other institutions. The data is being drawn from Aries. The data entry from EXTERNAL INVESTIGATORS has been entered in many formats which is making it difficult to analyse the information. In future, please take care when adding external researchers

data in INSTITUTION field = top-level institution only, eg University of Sydney, NOT department name

data in INSTITUTION ADDRESS = department can go here

data in COLLABORATION TYPE = select appropriate category, DON'T select "not known"

WHAT TO ENTER IN ARIES FOR ANU ARC DISCOVERY PROJECTS
The Research Office will import data from the ARC'S GAMS database where a record already exists in ARIES, and where the application is submitted by ANU.

Data to be entered in Aries by Local Business Offices:

Main tab

Title, Area processing application

Investigator tab

First-named ANU investigator

Department tab

Primary department (usually that of the first-named ANU investigator)

RFCD tab

One RFCD code - the other codes will be imported

Schemes tab

(1) Funds provider (Australian Research Council) and Scheme (2009 Discovery Grant).

(2) Enter the application number given to the researcher by GAMS in the “Funds Provider reference number” data entry box. This number has the format DP09xxxxxx.

Notes tab

Notes may be added and will not be over-written when data is imported

Documents tab

Documents may be added and will not be affected when data is imported.
