From the Director of the RO

The Research Office welcomes back Anne-Marie Hicks-Desvignes to the OSR.  Following recent staff changes in the Office of Sponsored Research, the College contacts in the OSR have now changed.  Further information is provided in the report in the Newsletter from the OSR.

The ANU RQF Panels are now in the process of identifying the ANU’s Groups and their membership.  The Groups will form the basis of ANU’s submission to DEST. We are planning to have all Groups and their membership identified before the end of November to enable us to provide an initial report to DEST in January 2008.

As part of our RQF preparations, almost all eligible academic staff have now been contacted and requested to update their publication information and their RFCD codes and to identify their best six publications on ARIES. The remaining eligible staff should receive a request from the Research Office this week.

The Go8 Research Office Directors meet recently at the University of Queensland.  Topics discussed included the RQF, the new Research Integrity Code of Conduct, contracts with R&D Corporations, the Higher Education Research Data Collection and the ACGR, and Thomson ISI reporting and G08 European Research Fellows and the Go8 Research Leaders Program.

The ORMD has commenced work on updating the Research and Postgraduate Activity (VC's) Spreadsheet.  This spreadsheet is used by the VC as part of the management information for the Budget Process.  It is vital that all Colleges ensure that all of their grant and research contract information (including information on the recently announced 2008 ARC and NHMRC rounds) is up to date in ARIES.  ORMD has included a request on ARIES data quality elsewhere in this Newsletter.

LX - ARC Materials Worlds Networks - Internationally Coordinated Initiatives (ICIs)

We have in the past received information from overseas funding bodies allowing people to believe applications for this scheme were due 30 Nov 2007. After confirming with the ARC we wish to clarify that this scheme is unlikely to be opened this year due to a lapse in financial commitment from the Australian government. The future of this scheme is unknown at this stage and all details are to be confirmed.

We wish to apologise to Researchers across the University and would like to encourage they check the ARC web site at: http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/lx/lx_ici.htm for further updates.

As the University is informed of progress or the opening of this scheme we will send notification using the normal processes and mention of it will be made in the RO fortnightly newsletter.

LUNCHTIME SEMINAR SERIES

The Office of Commercialisation is hosting two more lunchtime seminars as part of the RO lunchtime seminar series.

Topic: Protect or Perish?

The fundamental decision point in commercialisation is whether to protect or publish your research. This is often the most difficult decision to take, as at the point of invention your picture of what your discovery means, who might be interested, and what is already out there will not always be clear.

This seminar will draw from discipline specific examples in providing tips on how to identify if your research is patentable, and what you should consider in following the protection vs the publishing path.

Physical Sciences -
Time & Date:  Wednesday, 12:30pm-1:30pm, 5 December
Presented by Scott Berggren, Principal - Electrical Team, Spruson & Ferguson Patent Attorneys

Seminar Venue: Innovations Lecture Theatre, Innovations Building, Cnr Garran and Eggleston Roads

RSVP: commercialisation@anu.edu.au by 3 December (Physical Sciences)

Missing Applications

Although some areas have a well-defined process for ensuring that applications (as opposed to successful grants) are entered in ARIES as soon as they are submitted, we are aware that others have a backlog.

Please enter outstanding applications as soon as possible.  Why is this important?

·         Applications are an essential component for measuring research activity.

·         Colleges need the information for overall future planning.

·         Faculties, Schools, Centres and Departments need to know future commitments of resources (both money and facilities) as these will impact on staff planning, resource planning (equipment and buildings) and bids for general funds.

·         Research Development Managers need to know whether granting bodies have been approached previously.

·         Researchers need to have evidence of applications for promotional and c.v. purposes and to identify where the application is in the system.

·         Last, but not least, the Central Administration needs the information for long term planning, identifying activity involving other universities, and to measure its promised contributions for specific schemes.

If you need help extracting a report identifying the number of awarded grants compared with applications for any of your areas please contact us. Any queries may be made to Loris Trainor, David Lewis or Annika Landsmann – RO Business Solutions Group – RO.IThelp@anu.edu.au  ext 51541
