The Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) 2008 conference will be held in Hobart from 3-5 September 2008. The ARMS conference provides a valuable opportunity for research managers to keep up with developments in the field and to network with colleagues from other universities. The preconference workshops provide training opportunities for new staff. Pre-conference workshops and targeted site visits will be held on 3 September. The Conference website can be found at http://www.arms2008.com.au/. While at this stage the conference program is not available on the website, the workshops will include an introduction to research management and an introduction to IP management for research managers.

Draft Policy: Responsible Practice of Research

Over the last two months the draft ANU Policy Responsible Practice of Research has been circulated to the seven College Research Committees in the University.  The document is a combination of the principles and practices contained in the 2007 Australian Code for the Conduct of Responsible Research together with sections retained from the 2003 ANU policy: Responsible Conduct of Research.

In light of responses received, it is confirmed that there are a number of established discipline specific research practices that are not strictly in accordance with the 2007 Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, but do accord with the accepted codes and standards of specific disciplines.  These differences are most prevalent in the sections pertaining to Publication and Dissemination of Research Findings, and Authorship. While the necessity for peer review before public data dissemination is largely accepted in the physical and biomedical sciences (with the possible exception of some conference presentations), this is not the case in the creative arts, humanities, law and social sciences.  As concerns authorship there is a considerable diversity of accepted practices between the disciplines.

In finalising and subsequently interpreting this policy it is apparent that accommodating discipline specific research practices, and at the same time remaining in compliance with the Code, will be an interesting task.

Innovation ANU update

The first segment of Innovation ANU concluded last Wednesday evening with teams presenting their elevator pitches to the invited judges Glenn Dickens of Dolby Laboratories and Roslyn Hughes, CEO of Epicorp.

Twenty teams from across the university, incorporating undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic and general staff, were given two minutes each to express key elements of the innovation they are developing. Judges assessed the pitches on the credibility of the team members, the clarity of idea, technical validation, market potential and how motivated they as judges were to follow-up.

Congratulations to the winners of the pitch award: Dr Steven Mickelthwaite and Dr Joe Kurtz, both from the Research School of Earth Sciences. The judges unanimously agreed that the team ticked all the boxes for a good pitch. Steven and Joe have been awarded $1,000 for their pitch.

All teams also submitted two page executive summaries on their innovations which are still being assessed by the judges.

The pitch evening on the 23rd April finished off a six week program of events including sessions on Commercialisation 101 and Team Dynamics from Hamish Hawthorn, CEO of ATP Innovations; Intellectual Property Protection from Andrew Blattman of Spruson and Ferguson; Market Validation and Production Definition from John Hemphill of Pyksis; and Financial and Resource Planning from Nick McNaughton of Blue Cove Ventures.

It was good to see elements of what discussed in the information seminars being incorporated into the pitches.

Teams will spend the next six weeks researching and writing the commercialisation strategies and business plans for adoption of their innovations. The next official event is scheduled for Wednesday 4th June where teams will deliver more detailed presentations on their innovations, and submit their plans. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Cram and CEO of ANU Connect Ventures, Professor Tim Hirst will be among the judges for this next and final stage of the program.

Big thanks to all presenters and judges who have generously provided their expertise to the program thus far; and bigger thanks to the team of program organisers: Lachlan, Srinivas, Priscilla, Tyler and Fiona.
