THE SPIN DATABASE

SPIN stands for Sponsored Programs Information Network. It is a commercial database developed by InfoEd International. It is used worldwide by organisations to find sources of funding for research and is in use in most Australian Universities.

SPIN is a database of government and private funding opportunities from Australia and overseas. The search results give you information about a specific scheme, its eligibility conditions, it's deadlines and usually a web link to access the guidelines/instructions and application forms. If you find information that is applicable to your research situation, but cannot obtain the corresponding guidelines, contact your local Business Office.

The database is available to all ANU staff on any campus computer, subscription to SPIN relies on ANU IP addresses so accessing the database externally can pose difficulties - setting up a SMARTS profile can get around this issue.

GENIUS and SMARTS

GENIUS is an expertise database and SMARTS is a matching and retrieval system which provides personalised matching between researchers' profiles and SPIN keywords, emailing researchers directly with information on funding opportunities as they become available.

SMARTS [SPIN Matching and Researcher Transmittal System] is a facility which allow individual researchers to enter their research interests, categorised by the keywords within SPIN, and thereby develop a profile of personal research interests. Whenever a funding scheme is updated on the SPIN system, the keywords associated with that scheme are cross-checked against the research profiles in SMARTS. If there is a match, then the researcher is automatically sent a targeted email notifying them of the funding opportunity.

GENIUS [Global Expertise Network for Industry, Universities and Scholars] builds on the profile data which is entered for SMARTS matching, and allows researchers to enter a comprehensive set of information about their research expertise. This then informs the basis for an institutional expertise system.
