Publications Categories

All publications included in the DEST Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) must meet the DEST definition for research, which is outlined in the specifications. The following categories are currently in place for the HERDC. The code used in RePublic is listed along side each publication type.

Books (category A1)

Books MUST meet the following criteria:

  • be a major work of scholarship
  • be offered for sale (bound hard copy, CD-ROM or e-book by subscription)
  • have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
  • be written entirely by a single author, or by joint authors who share responsibility for the whole book
  • be published by a commercial publisher
  • and the author being claimed must be affiliated with the ANU

As long as the other criteria are met, the types of books that MAY meet the criteria include:

    • critical scholarly texts
      (eg. music or classical texts)
    • new ideas or perspectives based on established research findings
    • new interpretations of historical events

The types of books that are UNLIKELY to meet the criteria include:

    • textbooks
    • edited books
    • translations
    • anthologies
    • creative works (eg. novels)
    • revisions or new editions

Book Chapters (category B1)

This category refers to a contribution, consisting substantially of new material, to an edited compilation in which the material is subject to editorial scrutiny. The book within which the chapter is published MUST:

  • be offered for sale (bound hard copy, CD-ROM, or e-book by subscription)
  • have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
  • be published by a commercial publisher
  • and the author being claimed must be affiliated with the ANU

As long as the other criteria are met, the types of book chapters that MAY meet the criteria include:

    • a scholarly introduction of chapter
      length to an edited volume
    • a critical review of current research
    • a critical scholarly text of chapter length

The types of book chapters that are UNLIKELY to meet the criteria include:

    • entries in textbooks or reference books
    • revisions of chapters in edited books
    • brief introductions
    • appendices
    • anthologies
    • forewords
    • brief editorials
    • creative works (eg. collections of short stories)

Journal Articles (category C1)

To be included in this category the journal article must meet the following criteria:

  • be published in a scholarly journal
  • be subjected to peer review as defined by DEST (ie. must include the words 'peer reviewed')
  • have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
  • and the author being claimed must be affiliated with the ANU

Some journals may be regularly published as separate volumes with an ISBN rather than an ISSN. Provided that the publication is clearly identified as an edition of a journal, and not a book, articles in such publications may be eligible if they meet all other criteria. If an ISSN does not appear in the journal, external evidence such as an ISSN number being cited in an extract from Ulrich's Periodicals Directory or ISI Master Journals List is sufficient to demonstrate the existence of the number.

As long as the other criteria are met, the types of journal articles that MAY meet the criteria include:

    • research notes
    • letters to Nature
    • invited papers in journals
    • articles in a stand alone series
    • commentaries and communications of original research
    • critical scholarly texts which appear in article form
    • articles reviewing multiple works or an entire field of research
    • articles in journals which are targeted to both scholars and professionals

The types of journal articles that are UNLIKELY to meet the criteria include:

    • letters to the editor
    • case studies
    • editorials
    • book reviews
    • articles designed to inform practitioners on existing knowledge in a professional field
    • articles in newspapers and popular magazines
    • brief commentaries and communications of original research
    • reviews of art exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions

Conference Papers (category E1)

To be included in this category conference publications MUST meet the following criteria:

  • be published (ie. written proceedings, special or normal issue of a journal, CD-ROM, website, book)
  • the full paper was independently peer reviewed
  • be presented at a conference, workshop or seminar of national or international significance
  • and the author being claimed must be affiliated with the ANU

As meetings called "workshops" or "seminars" generally have lower status than meetings called "conferences", you must be able to demonstrate clearly that they have national or international significance and include the evidence with the verification materials, as for any conference (eg. list of participants with their institute of origin).

Keynote addresses may be included where all other papers for the conference are peer reviewed, and evidence is provided both of the keynote status of the address (eg. contents page) and of the other contributions to the conference being peer reviewed (eg. a statement in the introduction to proceedings indicating this).

The types of conference publications that are UNLIKELY to meet the criteria include:

    • papers that appear only in a volume handed out to conference participant

The following types of conference publications CANNOT be included:

    • posters
    • abstracts or extended abstracts
    • papers where only the abstract or extended abstract was peer reviewed
