ANU manages a venture capital fund through ANU Connect Ventures, offering funding opportunities to commercial opportunities arising out of research at the University, other Canberra-based research institutions and local R&D companies.
ANU Connect Ventures currently manages the Seed Investment Fund on behalf of the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) and allows for investments in early-stage commercial opportunities up to $500,000.
ANU is a key provider of funding and strategic support to accelerate research commercialisation in the Canberra region. ANU Connect Ventures (ANUCV) was established with the assistance of the ACT Government to encourage commercialisation of the region's technology, and manages:
- a $27M venture capital limited partnership fund for The Australian National University and the MTAA Superannuation Fund (ANU-MTAA) providing seed investments for equity in high growth high potential start-ups
- the Discovery Translation Fund, a proof of concept grant program designed to position emerging technologies for further investment.
Discovery Translation Fund projects have leveraged over $15M in investment and public and private funding since its establishment, at an average rate of 5.5 times grant funds awarded. The Seed Fund maintains a balanced portfolio representing multiple industry sectors, and companies at different stages of product development and revenue generation.
ANUCV is central to a number of innovation funding and support initiatives within the Canberra region, including the collaborative Canberra Innovation Network (CBR-IN), the GRIFFIN Accelerator Program, and co-working space Entry29.
