Burgmann College
Academic & Pastoral Support |

The New Residents' Program is held for 2 days during Orientation Week. The purpose of the Program is to introduce new residents to the College, the campus and Canberra. New residents have the opportunity to meet staff, tutors, and the Burgmann Residents Association House Committee, through organised activities and informal interaction. Sessions which address academic, social, personal and technology issues are facilitated by residential staff.
Tutorial System
Each year the College appoints 12 senior undergraduates and postgraduates
as residential tutors. The tutors provide personal, academic and
administrative support to other residents.
Academic support - The tutors assist residents in most fields of study and in essay writing, study methods, and exam techniques. Some tutors hold regular group tutorials, and all are available to provide individual assistance at a mutually convenient time. This assistance, like all college service, is provided at no extra cost.
The tutors organise Faculty Dinners, to which a guest speaker in the field and members of academic staff of the universities are invited. A University of Canberra dinner is also held. These dinners are a useful way for residents to meet their lecturers and tutors on a more informal basis.
Administrative support - Tutors are rostered on duty each night and are able to unlock rooms, provide light bulbs and other administrative support when required.
The IT Coordinator and IT Assistants assist students in connecting to and using the student network, and using machines in the computer room. An introduction to the College's IT facilities forms part of the New Residents' Program in Orientation Week.
Residential Staff
The residential staff have a wide experience of college, university and other fields of endeavour. They are available to assist students with social, personal, academic, or financial problems at any time. One member of staff is on duty at all times when the office is closed and is able to give assistance in an emergency.
