Works by Lenin

• From Marx To Mao provides a collection with most of Lenin's important writings
• A range of Lenin's writings are also at the Marxists Internet Archive or its Australian mirror

Note that the context in which Lenin wrote is often crucial to understanding the point of much of his work, which was frequently very polemical. He had a large output. It is possible to attribute just about any political position to Lenin by quoting him out of context. This is not to say that any one interpretation is as good as any other. Only that in reading Lenin it is always important to know something about who he was debating and why.

Books that provide valuable background for understanding Lenin's writing include:

• Tony Cliff Lenin, Pluto Press, London, originally in four, later in three volumes. A very readable general biography of Lenin which provides an excellent context for his writing.
• Paul Le Blance Lenin and the revolutionary party Humanities Press, Atlantic Highlands 1993. A very good account of Lenin's theory and practice in building and leading the Bolshevik Party.
• Georg Lukacs Lenin: a study in the unity of his thought NLB, London 1970. Originally published in German in 1924. Still excellent.
