State, Society and Governance in Melanesia

The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies has initiated a project on State, Society and Governance in Melanesia which focusses on questions of state and society relations, on public policy and service delivery, national and ethnic identies, separatist movements and the problems of public and domestic violence.

The Project runs a series of monthly seminars, aimed at developing discussion and debate of critical conceptual and practical issues for state, society and governance in Southwest Pacific countries (see below).

A large international conference is planned for a Pacific venue in 1998.

Academic publication of books and articles will proceed from the continuing work of scholars within RSPAS and the Fellows appointed to the Project.

The Project involves a strong team of eminent scholars, international recognised in their own respective fields who support and contribute to the work.
