ANU Spaces – Professor Ian Clarke

27 March 2017

Meet Professor Ian Clarke, the Dean of the ANU College of Business and Economics until December 2017.

Professor Clarke, what made you want to come to ANU and Australia, from the UK?

I came to ANU years ago to do my PhD, and I fell for the lifestyle and the physical environment. I like the vibe of Australian cities and their differences. When asked to help, I was keen to help my alma mater for a short period and to bring some of my experiences as Dean at Edinburgh and Newcastle to bear..

What is your favourite spot on campus?

Along by the river when the birds are making a lot of noise in the trees!

Do you have a favourite place you go for a coffee, or to take some time out from your busy schedule?

I love coffee. Sad though it sounds - and it drives my wife mad -- I even have a great coffee app on my phone that directs me to some unusual but very good places!

What do you believe are the strengths of CBE, here at ANU?

The standing of the University overall and the degree of autonomy enjoyed by our Schools.

What are you hoping to achieve in your time here?

I want to listen to ideas and help shape them, and create a stronger distinctiveness for the College as a whole, which is important in the markets in which we compete - whether for our programmes and students, faculty and staff, or for research, for example.
