ANU graduations come to a close

More than 2,100 students graduated at The Australian National University during mid-year graduations.

Ceremonies for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees were held at Llewellyn Hall.

Friends and family of students from the ANU College of Law watched on as the graduands took to the stage to receive their degrees.

Lisa Stone from the New South Wales South Coast graduated from a Juris Doctor and Diploma in Legal Practice.

Ms Stone didn't let the five hour commute stop her from studying at ANU.

``Every day I walk onto this campus, I thank my lucky stars and feel so grateful that I can participate in the education that I have received,'' Ms Stone said.

``I left school at 14 and I never thought that I would be standing here graduating from a Law degree and being admitted as a lawyer. I don't know what I imagined in my life but it certainly wasn't that.

``The support from the tutors, lecturers and mentors has really enabled me to do this. I didn't think I could do it and my very first lecturer said you can do this and we can talk you through it.''

In second semester Ms Stone will return to ANU to study a Masters of Law and she plans to go to the bar and become a barrister.

At the law graduation, ANU Chancellor Professor Gareth Evans ACQC said the ANU community is very proud of each and every graduand.

``We think of you as ambassadors for this great university of ours,'' Professor Evans said.

``Like your predecessors, you will find that your careers will take you to all parts of Australia, all parts of the world.

``We really do wish you all success in whatever it is that you undertake in the legal profession or outside and we hope and expect that you will bring yourselves and this university great credit in whatever you do.''

Another 898 students had awards conferred in absentia.
