ANU community farewells Union Court

26 May 2017

The ANU community has come together in a colourful farewell to Union Court.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Marnie Hughes Warrington joined ANUSA President James Connolly and PARSA President Alyssa Shaw to paint a goodbye message and pay homage to the space ahead of the Union Court redevelopment.

"For more than 40 years, Union Court has been the heart of the ANU experience," Professor Schmidt said.

"It's a place where everyone comes to learn, relax and enjoy the company of friends as well as to advocate and protest on the issues they feel most strongly about.

"The long-run traditions of O-Week events, Market Day, student elections, live music and the great places to eat and drink in Union Court are all essential parts of the ANU Experience.

"And although this space will have a different look and feel in 18 months' time, it is my goal to see, in both the Pop-Up Village and the new Union Court, these traditions flourish and improved for our community in the generations to come."

The $220 million revitalisation of Union Court and University Avenue includes new teaching and student buildings, a purpose-built event and theatre building, student accommodation, swimming pool, gym, outdoor spaces and amphitheatre, bars, event pavilions, cafes, services, shops and underground parking.

Stage one is due to be completed in 2019.
