ANU community celebrates sustainability

7 March 2014

On Thursday 20th February, the ANU community gathered in Union Court for the 7th annual Celebrate Sustainability Day. This event is a great start-of-the-year introduction for new students to the fantastic sustainability initiatives happening across ANU and in the wider Canberra region.

The 22 stall holders were varied, interesting and offered many exciting activities to engage students in their purposes and philosophies. ANUgreen, the University's sustainability office, ANU Environment Collective, ANU Organic Garden and ANU Sustainability Learning Community, were just some of the campus groups present on the day. They were joined by external environmental organisations such as the Conservation Council, Climate Action Canberra, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and the ACT Greens.

Of particular interest was the launch of a university-wide campaign by ANUgreen, the Campaign to Reduce Energy & Water (CREW), which aims to reduce utilities costs by 10% in 2014 and a further 10% in 2015 to save the university $1.7M.

There was a very high level of student engagement throughout the day, with over 1250 contact points with stallholders. The free BBQ at lunchtime and live music by local bands Hashemoto and Jason Recliner helped in attracting students, who enjoyed laying in the grass on a sunny day.

ANU continues to be a leader in campus sustainability and events like Celebrate Sustainability Day demonstrate the willingness of ANU students to get involved in campus and local sustainability initiatives.

ANUgreen would like to thank their generous sponsors - ANU Sport, Enigma Hairdressing, Co-op Bookshop and the Gods Café - for providing the prizes for the lucky draw. ANUgreen also wishes to thank all of the volunteers, who worked tirelessly to make such a large-scale event run so smoothly.
