The Australian National University (ANU) has appointed Professor Russell Gruen as Dean of the College of Health and Medicine.
Professor Gruen will join ANU from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.
Professor Gruen is widely published, and has a wealth of experience in medical education, research and clinical practice. He is Executive Director of the NTU Institute of Health Technologies and the founding Professor of Surgery at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
He has previously been Professor of Surgery and Public Health at Monash University, Director of Australia's National Trauma Research Institute and a trauma surgeon at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
ANU Provost Professor Mike Calford said the University is delighted to welcome Professor Gruen following a highly competitive global recruitment search.
"Professor Gruen has wide interests in the provision of health services. For more than 20 years he has applied health systems expertise, innovation focus, and partnership approaches to tackling the global burden of injury, and promoting access to safe surgery and anaesthesia with WHO, Australian Government programs and international professional societies," Professor Calford said.
"Professor Gruen will continue his passion for surgery and will undertake a fractional appointment as General Surgeon at The Canberra Hospital, further strengthening the link between ANU and ACT Health."
"I'd also like to to thank Professor Jane Dahlstrom for her extraordinary work as Interim Dean of the College of Health and Medicine over the last year. Jane's committed and cheerful approach to this difficult role has been highly valued by her colleagues."
Professor Gruen will join ANU in January 2019.
