Bengt-Olov Palmqvist is originally from Sweden and has B.Mus from Ingesund College of Music, Arvika and is a Master of Music in Pedagogy, Aural and Music Theory from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He has studied with the world renowned pedagogue, Lars Edlund and Jorgen Jersild and has since taken their established principles of aural training to new boundaries of success. He has been on the teaching staff of the School of Music since 1985. Bengt-Olov believes that successful tuition should allow students to develop and finally become musically independent and has a long line of successes in this respect including: Ann Sophie von Otter, Christian Lindberg, Julian Smiles, to name but a few. As well as providing tuition for a compulsory subject for all classical students at the National Institute of the Arts, Bengt-Olov regularly gives workshops and seminars for members of the wider musical community. As a highly experienced choral conductor these workshops have been welcomed by choirs and other singing groups. On the international front, several overseas tours have enabled him to visit other Universities and to teach students from other cultures and backgrounds. In 2002 seminars were given in both Sweden and the United States resulting in extremely positive feedback for his methodology and requests for his return as soon as possible. Bengt-Olov has always had a personal love for Jazz stemming from his days as a trumpeter and thoroughly enjoys writing jazz arrangements, particularly for A Cappella groups. ‘The Idea of North’ and the Jazz Vocal Group in Canberra have used several of his arrangements. For the last couple of years Bengt-Olov has dedicated all his non-teaching time to finalising his text ‘The Refinement of Rhythm’ (ISBN 0-9751302-0-X). This compendium is a condensation of his life’s passion of teaching music at all levels and his personal interest in the development of rhythmic understanding. School of Music faculty member since 1985.
