Australian cello performer, teacher and writer, David Pereira works
since 1990 from a professional base at the School of Music in Canberra
(Senior Lecturer and Head of the String Department), while residing
in the lovely Southern Tablelands town of Gunning. Much of his growing
up took place not far away in the cherry capital – Young –
so his intense affinity for Australia is largely of bucolic nature and
somewhat at odds with the cosmopolitan tendencies of most musical careers.
His fair share of successes has included awards for recordings, first
performances of Australian repertoire, performances and educational
experiences with many wonderful musicians from here and abroad, and
employment in some other of the more desirable positions that are available
to Australian cellists - Australia Ensemble, Principal Cello Australian
Chamber and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, teaching staff Sydney Conservatorium,
Australian National Academy of Music and National Music Camp, for example.
Especially fortunate has been his opportunity to make multiple recordings
for the company also run by his artistic management – Tall Poppies
Records – and to benefit from collaboration with its visionary
director – Belinda Webster. An anniversary collection of Peter
Sculthorpe’s works for cello, solo and with piano (Ian Munro),
and the J.S.Bach 6 solo suites, are recent releases. 2001 saw publication
of his first book – “Violoncello! One With Your Sound”
- a 200,000-word exploration of cello technique and artistry that aspires
to real importance as a practising cellist’s companion (it can
be found at violoncello.biz on the Web). This is seen as a valuable
adjunct to his pedagogical role at School and its String Department’s
continued striving for excellence of tuition and student achievement.
It is to the further development of this privileged synthesis of thought
about, teaching of, and the doing of cello playing, that David continues
to aspire.
School of Music faculty member since 1990.
