Barbara Jane Gilby joined the teaching staff of the Canberra School of Music in 2000 after fifteen years as Concertmaster of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra during which time the orchestra became known for the strength and quality of its string section and for its willingness to undertake innovative projects.

After completing her studies at the Canberra School of Music, Barbara undertook further study with Prof. Roman Totenberg at Boston University, graduating with the degree Master of Music, violin performance, in 1978. Six years of professional experience in Germany enabled her to attain fluency in the German language and to participate in a variety of ensembles including the Wuerttemberg Chamber Orchestra and North German Radio Orchestra, Hannover.

Miss Gilby’s teaching focuses on the development of natural and efficient posture, of problem solving skills and on the necessity for students to make the works they study their own. Her aim is to provide a challenging but supportive environment in which students can reach their full potential. She has some experience in, and is interested in helping students explore, baroque/classical performance practice on modern instruments.

Since commencing full-time tertiary teaching Miss Gilby has maintained an active performing career both as a soloist and as violinist with the Trigon Ensemble and guest leader of some of the major Australian orchestras. She is sought after as a string orchestra director and plays in many ad hoc chamber ensembles. CD releases include: Vivaldi The Four Seasons, Eighteenth Century Virtuoso String Music, Spirit of the Baroque, Incredible Floridas and The String Concerti of Richard Mills all released by ABC Classics.

School of Music faculty member since 2000.
