Scholarships

 

PROFESSOR H. BURTON SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

 

The Scholarship

The School of Music, in conjunction with Burton and Garran Hall, offers the Professor H Burton Scholarship in Music to Australian and international applicants who are intending to enrol at the School as full-time PhD students.

The Scholarship provides a flat at Burton and Garran Hall on the campus of The Australian National University at no cost for a period up to three years and an annual stipend of $6,800. (The flat, which is furnished, has two bedrooms, one of which is furnished as a study, and separate kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living area.) In total the Scholarship is valued at $14,996 per annum.

The Scholarship holder will be required to provide academic and personal leadership to undergraduate students, especially music students, residing at the Hall and offer music tutorials as required during teaching periods.

The Scholarship is awarded on the condition that the scholar is admitted to and continues to pursue full-time study as a PhD student at the ANU School of Music.

The School reserves the right to make no award or to award the Scholarship at other times in exceptional circumstances.

Application

Applicants should indicate on the Postgraduate Research Program and/or Scholarship Application form that they wish to be considered for the “Professor H Burton Scholarship in Music”.

In addition to the University’s requirements for admission to PhD, Scholarship applicants are required to:

· provide a one page statement describing why they should be considered for this Scholarship and how they will provide support and leadership to undergraduate students, especially those studying music, at Burton and Garran Hall;
· provide three character references; and
· attend an additional interview.

Note: The academic record you submit in support of your PhD application will be taken into consideration when your application for this Scholarship is being assessed.

This Scholarship will be available again in 2010.

Selection Criteria

The Scholarship holder will be a PhD candidate in the School of Music.

The Scholarship holder will have completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons) or Bachelor of Art (Music) or Bachelor of Arts with a major in music or an equivalent qualification, with a strong academic record. Equivalent qualifications will be assessed by the Selection Panel.

The Scholarship holder will be a person of good character and able to provide academic and personal leadership to undergraduate students, especially music students, and enliven residential life in the Hall.


Selection

Selection will be undertaken by a committee convened by the ANU School of Music Graduate Convener and will include the Head of Burton and Garran Hall.


Notification

The Selection Committee will notify applicants of the outcome by mid-January 2007.


Tenure and Termination

The Scholarship will commence upon enrolment but not before 1 February 2007.

The Scholarship may only be held while the scholar remains enrolled in a PhD program at the School of Music.

The scholar is expected to be available throughout the academic year. Absences from the University must be approved by the Head of the School of Music.

The Scholarship will terminate on 31 December 2009. In the case of the scholar withdrawing from the PhD program at the School of Music the Scholarship will be terminated. The School may terminate the Scholarship if the scholar is not meeting the requirements of the award.
