The piano in Australian chamber music
Prof. Larry Sitsky is currently leading a research team in the investigation the role of the piano in the development of Australia's musical culture. The research, which is assisted through the Australian Research Council (ARC), is looking at the Australian repertoire for piano and chamber ensemble from the late 19th century to the recent past. An important part of this work involves locating original manuscripts which have not been published or made accessible through libraries such as the Australian Music Centre. The consequent analytical study of this music, and specifically the treatment of the piano in this context, will provide a novel perspective on the changing styles and approaches to chamber music during more than a century of Australian composition.
The piano manufacturing industry in Australia
Associate Prof. Geoffrey Lancaster is researching the history of piano manufacture and design in Australia. His work includes the creation of a national registry of significant pianos held in collections, both private and public. He is gathering historical background information on the role these pianos had in the musical lives of those who made, marketed and performed on them.
