As I have said before, the world is non-linear and this could be an
example of it.

The biggest commercial threat to Microsoft may not be another
Microsoft, it could well be a phenomena that comes out of left field
- the availability of free software, both application and operating
system.

One of the biggest holes in the road for Linux is the dearth of
applications, but that is being paved over with new software that
could possibly include enterprise resource planning (ERP)
applications.

Corel said Friday that WordPerfect 8 for Linux Personal Edition will
be available as a free download from the company's website when the
final
product is released in November. The company will also sell a
shrink-wrapped version of the product with documentation and extras,
such as templates, for $49, and a 10-user server-based version for
$500.

Informix broadened its Linux product line last week, saying it will
add Informix Dynamic Server, Informix-SE for Red Hat Linux, and
Informix
Dynamic 4GL to its Linux offerings. Informix-SE, an SQL database for
small- to medium-sized businesses, had already been announced for
Caldera Linux.

Luckily, Microsoft is working on an operating system for home
television that will help users select their shows. Every program
will have to have a descriptive, eight-character title, and viewers
will gain extensive control as they learn to configure their TV.INI
files.
