Scientists say hole in ozone layer has suddenly grown
Fri, 2 Oct 1998
The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica has grown very suddenly
over the past month, according to the World Meteorological
Organisation in Geneva.
Scientists measuring ozone levels over Antarctica have recorded a
sharp drop between August and September this year.
Dr Rumen Bojkov from the World Meteorological Organisation says over
parts of the southern continent, ozone levels have been annihilated,
and that during September ozone has declined faster than ever
before.
Ozone depletion, caused by the release of man made chemical
compounds, is associated with higher rates of skin cancer and
cataracts as well as damage to the marine food chain.
