Y2K and embedded system

I must be missing something here.

Can anyone tell me why any embedded system would have software dependent on a
critical date -- something that would cause a missile to target Moscow by
itself, or a fly-by-wire plane to loop-the-loop, or a microwave oven to
overcook the turkey on Xmas day?
