To address a blatantly flawed argument I'll put in my 2 cents worth.

This actually just reflects the tremendous effort (effort/power/money)
that Microsoft has put into marketing the product. History shows us
that the success of a product/platform does not always depend solely
upon it's fitness for a purpose. A good example is the home video
market where VHS (clearly the inferior platform, won over BETA).
I'm not saying that NT is inferior, however I am saying that it's
success is more of a marketing triumph than anything else.

On the IDC figures mentioned above, I'd be interested to know whether
it took into account that large portion of freeware UNIX variants
available such as Linux , NetBSD etc. I know of many unix shops that
used to run SCO, SunOS etc that now run Linux and would usually not
be counted in 'sales of server O/S products".
